Ohio State probably makes $600k on sales of Coca-Cola at a home football game. It was a strange, ill-timed coaching change, but they'll be okay.
Plus, I have less problem with an AD throwing its money around when it doesn't take any subsidies from the students or academic side. If they're asking me to donate to the history department at the same time they're sinking 20 or 25 million dollars a year into the AD, that's a bigger problem for me.

The upshot of all this is that O$U b-ball doesn't Matta anymore.

I don't know whether to groan or laugh! I will admit, if you don't tell anyone, that it did bring a smile to my face.

The only way I see this having repercussions for us or other MAC schools is if the school who Ohio State poaches from takes a MAC coach at this late date. I still think Gene Smith (the OSU AD) had an Ace up his sleeve, otherwise he's really rolling the dice at this late date. The fact no search committee has been named makes think he has that Ace. I suppose if worse comes to worse, he names Chris Jent interim coach. However, that would really be a waste of a year and bound to upset the stomachs of people in Columbus who rarely give basketball much of a second thought.

I'm generally with you on this. They have to have started work on an agreement with someone. I figure they'll let the feel good of everything Matta & staff did filter throughout the media for a week or so, and then announce the guy they've pretty much sealed the arrival of next week sometime.

Hiring Jent as an interim would be a PR disaster for OSU. Could have kept Matta in place for that.

I'm in favor of chaos and Ohio State doing something dumb, so I say they hire a cantankerous old alum. The ol' rabbit hunter.

The ol' Rabbit Hunter has forgotten more about the game than most learn about it. I'd be fine with him coming in for four years to do so. Problem is Bobby Knight wants nothing to do with OSU.

Would they pay us for three years of work we would never do is the big question?
Let's face it, we're probably all in the wrong professions...
I know you are saying this tongue-in-cheek but the years and years and years these guys have to toil making nothing, spending countless hours away from their families should not be discounted. That with no guarantee that you'll ever get that brass ring.

If you believe Ohio State would hire 76-year old Bobby Knight — who was last seen wearing Purdue colors to irk the school where he built his legacy and to which he refused to return in order honor its greatest team because of a grudge — as its basketball coach in 2017...well, I won't finish that sentence.

Not sure what the light of day will bring, but Creighton's Coach Greg McDermott rumored to have been offered the Buckeye job. Doesn't seem to be the marquee guy the Buckeyes thought they would get. If true, does Creighton look to a MAC coach to fill the void? Maybe someone who knows a great deal about the Missouri Valley Conference could comment. After the Cleveland game, too tired to try and ponder this now.

Greg McDermott coming out of left field......that will really rally the troops in Columbus....not.

To be honest, this seems like a real downgrade. Well, at least TOS can't possibly end up back in Ohio right?

What MAC coach is on anybody's radar at this point? There really isn't anybody that would be attractive to larger programs. Also Creighton is in the Big East and not the MVC anymore. And he may not be a sexy pick for the fanbase but Greg McDermott is a solid coach who has done a good job at Creighton. They were a top 5 team last year until Maurice Watson got hurt. Considering it's June he would be a good hire. Personally, I don't understand why they didn't just let Matta have his farewell tour so they could get a bigger pool of coaching candidates to pick from next year.

Agree with you Van. I discussed similar things regarding this earlier today. He's not the sexy pick that Ohio State fans, from my perspective, will expect. I think they will want someone at the men's hoops helm who is comparable to Urban. McDermott is absolutely a solid coach, but how much better is he going to be than Matta in the next couple years? If they'd done this in the last weeks of March, or early April, the pool of exciting coaches certainly would have been larger. And it probably would have has less of an impact on recruiting. Letting him ride off into the sunset on a farewell tour has risks in recruiting, but it's probably no worse than they've already done to themselves by doing this when they did it.

Given the timing, a guy I'm surprised didn't get an interview (that we're aware of) is Tom Crean.

OUVan, you're right in the late hour after the Cavs game and trying to digest the Buckeyes hire, I posted that Creighton was still in the MVC. My back to the future moment. However, I still believe this is not what Buckeye AD Gene Smith had in mind. Judging from the consternation coming out of Columbus this morning, I am not sure he would like to do a meet and greet anywhere within the Columbus outerbelt, and this is basketball which usually doesn't get anywhere the interest that a Buckeye football hire would get.

Maybe Buckeye to Bobcat or some else can remember, but wasn't Coach McDermott on the hot seat at Iowa State before he got hired at Creighton? Did he even have a winning record there? Unlike Dayton (a Marianist) school, Creighton is a Jesuit school and thus because of the overtly Jesuit make up of the Big East (the power broker being Georgetown) got into the conference.

As for the MAC, Coach Murphy still gets a lot of publicity (for an Eastern Michigan coach.) Coach Phillips is also a man on the rise, I doubt he would be on their radar, but stranger things have happened.

I might also add that this helps us because we may be able to get into more living rooms to talk to players that normally might not be receptive to a MAC school. Those of us of a certain age remember Coach Nee's strong recruiting classes when Coach Eldon Miller was at the helm in Columbus.

Two things: Nate Oats will have a bigger job someday. He's a heck of a recruiter and has had some success.

Do you think Saul would consider Creighton? He has been a successful mid-major coach and his aw shucks optimism and demeanor would probably work really well there. I AM NOT HOPING HE LEAVES BY THE WAY! Just wondering what people thought.

I agree that Oats will have a bigger job (as will Saul) someday but neither will be on anyone's short list if an opening occurs tomorrow. A second year coach with a 37-30 record and zero postseason wins isn't exactly going to fire up a fanbase. The original question was if McDermott gets hired in Columbus would it affect any MAC coaches and my answer is no. There isn't a coach in the MAC that is any position to be offered a better job currently.

What if this was 2012 and Groce had not been picked up by Illinois. In the situation the Evil Empire is in right now, do you think the Suckeyes would have jumped at Groce or gone to some other high profile coach?

Based on the buildup that Matta gave him when he left for us,I think OSU might have given him a shot.
