Per this article, if Simmons commits to Michigan, he may have to wait until May 24th to know if there's an open scholarship.
https://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2017/04/for_jo...
The article is crap and it's exactly why the grad transfer rule is irritating.

Michigan is currently recruiting Ohio transfer Jaaron Simmons and Wright State transfer Mark Alstorkl
How is this possible? Mark Alstork has publicly stated he is transferring, and he retweeted some reports announcing recruiting visits he is taking so I have no problem with that, but how can someone be actively recruiting Simmons? How can dozens of Michigan fans be convinced Simmons is transferring in when he hasn't stated anywhere (that I know of) that he would be leaving Ohio? Is it even legal to reach out to a player just because you know he's graduating and wouldn't have to sit out a year?
The even more puzzling situation is...

...if Michigan's two underclassmen who are testing NBA draft waters (Wilson and Wagner) come back to Michigan and Michigan lands that highly touted recruit Mamba who they are holding a scholarship for, then there won't even be an available scholarship for Simmons or Alstork. They're operating under a premise that they don't even know the outcome for. And it screws over everyone in the process.

Someone is going to get left out in the cold and I really hope its not Ohio or Simmons.

I mean if you're Saul you kind of at some point have to assume Jaaron isn't going to be there right? He can't just go out on the road without an idea of who we need.

I do appreciate the author's perspective on how college basketball is becoming different in recruiting yearly instead of building a team for the future.

Wish I could say I am shocked by how this is going down and good to know my sources are still gold on this stuff.

It is my understanding that if a player has received his release from his school that he can talk to other schools. Getting that release doesn't necessarily mean the player isn't coming back.

I guess Simmons is so good we have to let him play us. Bummer. But, he's gotta do what's best for him 100%. This is what college sports is now. Can't be upset wit Simmons.

One worry now is he stays, regrets it, and is miserable playing to empty MAC and mid-major gyms all next season.

Counterpoint: he comes back and plays well in the Charleston Classic on national TV and leads us to a MAC championship where he plays in front of a national TV audience and full house during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

I'm biased, but I don't see much upside beyond being able to say "I played B1G ball." Here he has a coach who loves him enough to give him the keys to the team with basically no limits, tons of potential with blossoming talent around him, full understanding of the system (which is built specifically to showcase his talents) and presumably the trust and togetherness of his teammates. Michigan can't even guarantee him a scholarship, let alone PT, the freedom to make mistakes, etc.

It's his call, and we have no right to be angry with whatever decision he makes, but I honestly think staying is the best thing for his career. He's destined to earn money playing somewhere either way.

If Simmons is anything, he's a competitor. Would you be happy playing 3 maybe 4 games against top 100 teams or 10-15 or more games against top 100 teams. I have no idea where he lands, but it's his decision to make. I'm glad we had him for whatever time it turns out to be.

+1 He could lead us to a couple tourney wins as well.

He will get feed back from the scouts, he needs to share that feedback with Saul and Saul needs give JS a plan to improve those things and he needs to coach him up, JS does not need to leave. Lillard and McCollum played mid major ball and they are doing fine in the NBA.

Just because we understand his motivation doesn't mean we have to like it. This is just another way the big boys are sticking it to the little guys (us). I do have to applaud Jaaron for graduating and making himself eligible to reap this reward however. Good for him, bad for us.

It's really hard for me to hold this against Simmons. It's hard to argue much with a student athlete, who has already graduated, looking at other options that provide him with better professional development opportunities.

Agree here. He has to do what he thinks is best for him. I don't like how the system works, but Jaaron can and should do whatever he can to further advance his career.

Michigan or some other programs might make some sense, OSU would not. I feel like on a neutral court we are right with Ohio State currently.

The transfer-happy epidemic that has hit this sport is awful. Why can't kids see a commitment til the end and make the best of whatever situation they're in?

That's kind of my question. I've not heard anything other than testing draft waters like a couple hundred other players. If other schools were supposedly interested in him, but he's not declared himself open for a transfer, is that not tampering according to the NCAA?

This is why the grad transfers should also have to sit a year. Then the ones who are truly interested in furthering themselves as students will transfer for the purpose of academics, and the ones who are leaving (often for a second transfer) will stay put so that they don't sit another year.

If Haskins wins the backup job, we may be able to work something out with OSU. Best wishes to Burrow.

Reports of Michigan looking for graduate transfers is all over the internet due to their roster uncertainty. The author of the article just tweeted about another grad-transfer from Howard who is set to visit Michigan.

Unlike Michigan, Ohio currently has open scholarships and is very well-positioned for a success next year. The other guy mentioned in that article (Mark Alstork) has actually announced he will transfer if he doesn't enter the NBA draft. Like Simmons, Alstork played high school ball in Dayton. Alstork averaged nearly 20ppg last year at Wright State.

A Simmons/Alstork backcourt at Ohio would get quite a bit of attention from NBA scouts...

Quite a bit of attention where? In Ann Arbor? Because Alstork isn't coming to Athens.

Yeah it's definitely Ann Arbor. IF, and this is a pretty big if, Michigan has any scholarships available when the time comes.

The kid from Howard led the nation in scoring (27) two years ago and is visiting Michigan as well as several other power 5 conference schools.

Have there been any updates on Simmons? I have been hearing from other sites that he is intending on transferring if he withdraws from the draft.

I haven't seen anything on him on here in a couple of weeks.

Word is he is visiting Michigan this week and him and Greg Paulus from OSU just followed each other on Twitter
What "sites" are you referring to?
The Twitter I can confirm and the Ohio State information I can confirm from my sources up there. I told you people on here that they were going to make a run at him and wish I could say I were shocked.
Jaaron favorited this tweet.

Yippee so he favored one tweet. I am telling you now and will tell you again Ann Arbor and Columbus are both gunning for him big time. Michigan is still waiting on a recruit to decide and their two draft eligible players. Once those dominoes fall then they will make their move. The Wright state kid Will have first dibs on a spot in Ann Arbor due to the one assistant coach

As to Columbus they are still singing that they need a point guard and have Simmons in mind. I still have a lot of friends in and around the program and do usually have a good pulse on what else is happening out there because of my business
