Topic: WKU is much better than last season unfortunately

They have 6 transfers including one that played at Virginia and one that played at Kansas. This is going to be a tough assignment.

They beat Purdue and lost close to Villanova.

They also beat a good SMU team. They have our old friend Lamonte Bearden as well. But talk about not using your bench. They only have had 8 guys play the entire season. Anybody know what that's about? They've got guys playing 35 and 38 minutes in a 20 point blowout.

I would guess trying to red-shirt some guys? They only list 12 players to begin with. The 5-star guy obviously never happened for them. If he had, they would be scary.

SMU beat a very talented Southern Cal team that was ranked #8 in the nation at one point and has several potential 1st round NBA picks. (I saw USC play in person and their punk attitude is probably what is holding them back. Glad to see they lost a couple of games and dropped almost out of being ranked at all)

In a way, I'm wondering if the 5* guy not staying isn't addition by subtraction. It never sounded like he wanted to be there that much.

Looking forward to this one.

The 5-star had four options to get ready for the NBA draft:

1) Stay at WKU, play a season of Division 1 games, even if it's against competition he should mostly dominate.
2) Go overseas and play professionally like Brandon Jennings. Might be good for an 18 year old kid to take his lumps against pros who would love to push around a hotshot American.
3) Go to the D-League, also get pushed around by professionals.
4) Stay home and train.

Someone gave this kid bad advice, because he picked the option where he will not be playing games

Or, option 5) shoplift in a foreign country, have dad pull you out of school, sign with agent, declare for draft

We start one freshman and two other freshmen, get a lot of minutes. Should be a good game, but boy was I looking forward to having more bench.

Why is that “unfortunate?” A win over them would simply look that much better. Let’s face it, the MAC isn’t getting an at-large bid again until who knows when. You want to face good competition in the non-conference. I’ll take a losing record against good teams in the non-conference over a winning record against a bunch of crappy teams any year.

This is why it's unfortunate. I was in Bowling Green KY last season, sitting right behind Block's dad at the game. We didn't beat them when we had Campbell and Kaminski and Simmons. Sure there was some bogus officiating which Saul went ballistic over leaving the court at the end, but we also blew a huge first half lead and Saul also was not prudent about saving a TO for the end of the game (which it turned out it was needed for that last possession to have any chance). So now after getting blown out at Maryland, a cupcake game would seem like a good thing to restore some confidence. You already admitted that there will be no second MAC bid to the NCAA no matter what the out of conference strength of schedule is. Besides, I already don't like Stansbury from his days at Mississippi State and it gives me a reason to now not like WKU basketball and wished they sucked no matter who they are playing.

Not have a bench. We currently use an 8 man rotation with all 8 parts contributing. If everyone suddenly gets healthy that will make it an 11 man rotation. That ain't happening. Someone won't be playing much at all. Probably best to redshirt somebody.

Not so unfortunate to beat a solid team in WKU today. I’ll take these kinds of wins any day of the week over the glorified high school/cupcake Coppin States of the world. These are the kind of games you come to Ohio to play in.

OK - I will say I agree their performance rankings are pretty much right on. If that = "suck", well so be it.....

I'm good with that comparison. And with not scheduling those conferences, or at least scheduling the best teams from those conferences.

Kentucky (WKU, Murray State, Morehead State, NKU, etc)
Tennessee (Belmont, MTSU)
Michigan (Oakland, Detroit)
Ohio schools (Wright St, Cleveland St, Youngstown St, etc)
Indiana schools (IUPUI, IPFW, Indiana State, Evansville, etc.)
Pennsylvania (Robert Morris, St. Joes, Lehigh, LaSalle, Duquesne)

Back in the Snyder Era we had home-home schedules with both Morehead State and Louisville (yes, they weren't as snobby back then).

All of those are more compelling and interesting for OUr fan base than the likes of Coppin State or other MEAC/SWAC schools. The logistics of scheduling them compared to the MEAC schools, I don't know.

Murray is about an hour and change from Martin, TN. Martin is near NOTHING. Middle of nowhere west Tennessee.

Murray is even kind of middle of nowhere western Kentucky ... which is funny, because Western Kentucky U is actual not in western Kentucky ... it's more central Kentucky.

Anyhow ... I've said for years a Murray/Ohio series would be a win-win for both schools ... unfortunately a one-off bus trip for either doesn't seem to interest them.

Had Ohio maybe done a two-for ... and did a trip to WKU and Murray ... or even Murray and Vandy/MTSU/Belmont that would work.

I'd love to be a part of the scheduling discussion/construction.

I found it fascinating when I was talking to an Iona assistant on a flight that they had not played a home game yet when they traveled to Ohio a couple weeks ago?!?! That's crazy!

Good for them for not scheduling Our Sisters of the Poor .... but he also made the comment that they cannot afford to buy home games like Ohio (Mount St. Mary's, MEAC/SWAC punching bags)

I've found the whole scheduling thing fascinating over the years ... would love to see what goes into it for a school like Ohio from the inside.

I lived in Murray, Ky., for two years. It is in an area of Kentucky called The Jackson Purchase. The defacto capital of The Purchase is Paducah. This part of Kentucky, everything west of the Tennessee River (Lake Kentucky), has a culture all of its own. It was the only part of Kentucky (other than a few stray counties) that was decidedly pro-Confederate during the late Rebellion. The rest of Kentucky, as one wag put it, waited until after the war to secede. Books have been written about that phenomenon, so I won't go into more detail here. UT-Martin is in a part of Tennessee that was also part of the Jackson Purchase. I don't know today how distinctive that part of Tennessee is from the rest of the state, but it's certainly nothing like the Knoxville and surround counties on the other end of the state.

Kentucky does have a strange way of naming their state universities -- Murray is west of Western and Morehead is east of Eastern. I believe in both cases the truly farther from center school is younger than the named directional, so that might account for names. They were more accurate at the time of their founding than today; however, eastern is not much east at all. Western is farther west than eastern is east.
