All the RPI/SOS stuff aside, they're not bad, and in the top half in the A-10. The A-10 might be down this year, but it's been a 2-4 bid league for a few years, so it's still a top-10 RPI league. Watch them play, and they're pretty solid. Given how bad they've been, that counts as on the rise for me.

I've watched them a few times. Saw them play a 2-OT marathon with Lasalle on TV. I wasn't overly impressed. They have some talent ... and yes, considering where they've been ... it's most certainly an improvement.

But I also think they are benefiting record-wise from a painfully down year in the A-10 and a dreadful out-of-conference schedule where the only P6 team they played was Pitt ... who might not win 5 games in the MAC this year.

Their non-conference strength of schedule is 347 out of 351.

Dambrot knew what he was doing ... build up some wins ... build up some confidence ....

This program needed something to kick start it. If it's empty wins in year one ... so be it.

I'll be more sold on them in a few years when the A-10 is humming again if they're .500 or better in the league.

A-10 hasn't been a one-bid league since 2005. So this is very much an abnormal year in that league. And Duquesne is taking advantage.

All fair points bshott44. I'm gonna go see them play later in the year. I'm looking forward to it!

As much as I hate Dambrot (I think he's a jackass) .... I'd like to see Duquesne relevant.

I grew up in WV watching WVU play in the A-10 vs. the Dukes.

Was always surprised that being in Pittsburgh, they could never really field a NCAATourney-type team.

Palumbo Center is a mini-version of what Xavier has ...

Really a head-scratcher they haven't been to the tourney since 1977 ... and has only had two 20-win seasons since (1981 & 2009)

Tonight 2/2:

Biggest game of interest in my mind is URI at VCU on ESPN2. Top 2 teams in the A10 going head to head.

Unless you're watching Ivy League hoops, there's not a ton of other games of interest tonight.

Saturday 2/3 -- not as many massive Top 25 match-ups this Saturday, but still some good ones:

Toward the top of the AAC at noon:

Houston at UCF (ESPNU)
UC at UConn (ESPN2)

Butler at noon on FS1 hosting Depaul.

2pm:
UD at UMass for the local interest
Texas Tech at TCU (ESPNU) - huge game for TCU to keep at-large status intact.

4pm Bama at Florida on ESPN

6pm - USC at UCLA on ESPN2

6:30
Oklahoma at Texas

8:15
Michigan State at IU

There are several top of conference games in the Mid-Majority Saturday:

In the SoCon - 2pm - Winthrop hosts Radford

In the Missouri Valley - where everyone is pretty close:
2pm - Missouri State at Loyola
4pm Evansville at Illinois State

At the top of the America East - Vermont visits UMBC on ESPN3 - 4pm
At the top of the A-Sun FGCU visits Jacksonville on ESPN3 - 6pm
In the Colonial, C of C visits Hofstra (who we saw in Charleston) - 7pm
Yale visits the Palestra and Penn -- 7pm on ESPN3
UAB at ODU -- 7pm on ESPN3
UNLV at Boise State -- 8pm on CBSSN

And then Late night out west there are three pretty good ones where the top 4 in the WCC face off, and the top of the PAC12 face off.

9pm - Saint Marys at San Diego
10pm - BYU at Gonzaga
10:30 - Arizona at Washington

I think URI wins handily tonight.

VCU isn't the VCU we've become accustomed to in recent years. I know they're 14-8 (6-3) ... but their best win might be vs. Old Dominion and Bucknell? They lost by nearly 30 at a .500 Dayton team. I think URI and St. Bonnie are the best two teams in the A-10 .... but that's my opinion based on the eye test watching some games. I think URI can make some noise in March. They're pretty damn good. Sadly, the rest of the A-10 is not (as we've discussed in re: Duquesne)

Loyola is head-and-shoulders above rest of MVC. They let one slip away at Bradley this week ... win that and they are skating to regular season title. This is another team that could be dangerous in March. They already won at Florida. Unfortunately they'll have to win Arch Madness to get to NCAAs.

Vermont might have their toughest game left on schedule Saturday. 27 straight conferences wins (???) ... going to UMBC who's 11-0 at home. Catamounts are pretty good.

I haven't seen Loyola other than that win at Florida, but I agree - they'll have to win Arch Madness to get in. I hope they do. I think it's been awhile since they've gone dancing.

With URI, ya never know. On the road at the Seigel Center, on a Friday night is a tough place to play.

Personally, of all the non-MAC games this weekend, I'm just hoping the Bearcats go up to UConn and smash the Huskies. I won't hold my breathe though, as Storrs and Hartford aren't usually kind to them.

Loyola is good ... Porter Moser has them humming. They've blown out a lot of MVC teams.

I just think URI is on a different level in the A-10 this year ... and they got their scare vs. Duquesne. Not sure VCU can hang with them ... but we'll see!

UC is an odd animal ... they are top ten but haven't consistently smacked teams around like they are capable of.

Tale of two halves vs. Houston.

I think UConn is a mess ... and UC should win handily. But who knows with them!

As a Bearcat fan since I was young, I agree that UC should be beating teams more handily at times. This year's team is very, very talented. That Houston game showed me a few things that tells me they're able to beat top teams. They extended the lead without Gary Clark, plus Jacob Evans created chances off the dribble and from behind the arc, and he hit the glass. They play D better than all but 10-15 teams in the country. Lastly, outside of the major blue bloods of college hoops, there are few teams in the country deeper than Cincinnati.

As for URI, no question they're a notch above the rest of the A10 this year.

Pardon a little thread drift, but I’d like to see us start scheduling Loyola (Chicago) again. Any reason we can’t or shouldn’t?

I think that would be a great game to schedule. Plenty of Bobcats in the area. A good one for one of they could make it happen.

Who would have believed, going into the day, that KU, Duke, and Kentucky lose in the same afternoon?

Our former commit Tariq Owens had 17, that might have been a career high for him against. Duke.
