I'd rather keep Cornish than lose him and try to fill the spot. But I'm also not super upset about it. My goal going in was to keep that core group of Clayton and the 4 sophomores together and it appears we will achieve that.

Has anyone gotten any confirmation on Wiz? I refuse to believe he is definitely gone just because of the roster on ohiobobcats.com.
Shereef, Clayton, Hadaway, Elmore J, AJ Brown, Sheldon --keeping them would be a coup.
Add: Searls (instant PT) with time to develop for Ayden E, Nichol and Burris.
Still leaves us with 3 openings if Alex E isn't on scholly. Time to nab a PG from a mid-major, a 3 and D from a JUCO or mid-major and maybe another freshman big.

My stance isn't that the grass is always greener. It may not be. My stance is that Cornish is a below replacement level player and getting a swing at getting more value out of that roster spot is worthwhile.

If we swing and miss, we're basically just in the same place we were at with Cornish. So it's all upside and very, very limited downside.

He averaged 1 point and 1 rebound per.

Was he a walk-on at Michigan?

Shereef averaged 1.8 ppg last year at Creighton. There's a reason these guys transfer down. I wouldn't write Khayat off just yet.

Agree here. Grass isn't always greener. Cornish, if he continued to develop, could have been a 15-20 minute guy next year as a Jr then who knows as a Sr. Look around our roster. Guys over 6'3 who shoot 3s well aren't exactly plentiful. We need more not less. Not the end of the world but we aren't guaranteed to get anyone bigger or better via the portal unless some folks are bringing sacks of cash we aren't aware of.

Let's hope Boals and Co. can work their magic and bring in some gems. We just can't expect it before it happens.

On the Wiz, zero confirmation that he's in the portal anywhere. All we have is ohiobobcats.com removing him from the roster. That could be a mistake, or maybe it means he just isn't playing anymore anywhere.
Ohio Men's Basketball posted pictures of the team on Instagram (doing some good will stuff) the Wiz was present. That tells me he is on the team? Or is he just hanging out with the team until the end of the semester?

Jaylin Hunter and Miles Brown were also in those pictures, so.....

Proud of our guys for doing civic contributions locally.

Clayton looked like he was bussing tables!

If we still have 3 openings at this point I am concerned. Coach had all last year with 1 open scholarship to recruit and did not find a player. There is concern when the roster is not filled.

We’re coming out of a dead period in the recruiting cycle. For all we know, some of the guys we’ve contacted over the weeks have visits scheduled. We unfortunately have no inside reporting.

And the extra "covid year" is about to go away, so the portal is crawling with talent. Guys are still jumping in every day. There is a good chance we will all be somewhere between pleasantly surprised and really elated with who signs up.

As the coaching openings work itself out, there might be a lull in new names in the portal followed by a last minute rush of guys who are mulling it over.

Hey, let's think of the last 2 years. We've had one great find (Jaylin, Reef) and one swing and miss (Wiz, Ike). I personally think Searls is going to be something the middle (solid, rotational, perfectly made for MAC ball) but I don't think we've found our great find yet. I think it's gotta be tough if our Top 6 guys return because playing time is going to be sparse so you're not going to get someone who wants to be "the man." We need someone happy with 15 minutes per game, 6 points and 6 rebounds (or assists also).

Just because we're returning Reef, Sheldon, James, Brown, Hadaway and Clayton doesn't preclude someone new getting starters minutes IMO.

We could bring in a starting PG still, moving Reed to his more natural SG position.

We could bring in a starting C moving Clayton to his more natural stretch 4 spot.

For that matter I'd bring in a starting wing. James can score but his defense is atrocious and he's severely undersized. Yet to be seen if his driving ability and athleticism will return post-injury (we hope). If not, he's not a good shooter either. With AJ Brown, he showed flashes of being a scorer as a freshman but was mostly a 3pt shooter. I'd like to see a much more well rounded game from him, and the ability to actually stay healthy for a full season before saying his spot couldn't be upgraded.

Just saying, for the right guy, we CAN provide minutes. It's not like we have the full roster from a Sweet 16 team returning.

As of right now, according to Verbal Commits there are 1,584 players in the portal. 191 have signed (and that includes those that chose to stay put). That's 12.1% signed so far.

In just the MAC we've had 58 enter the portal, and 11 signees.

It's still way early in this screwed up process.

Yes, exactly right. Reef wasn't hurting for playing time last year with a lead guard next to him, and we don't actually have a starting caliber 3. Hadaway's shown tons of potential, but seems like a tweener who works best as a 4 in a small ball lineup. He's not yet a playmaker on the perimeter.

We definitely have more than enough minutes to go around.

I imagine the reason we're seeing a lot of connections to wings is because the staff also believes we don't have a starting 3 right now. It could be an easier way to add height to the starting lineup if one is 6'6/6'7, without bumping AJC and Hadaway.

Move AJB to the 2. Shereef isn't a PG but I don't think I can handle another season of two 6'0-6'1 guys starting in our backcourt again. I'd rather roll the dice on Reef starting at PG and hope he facilitate more. It's not like he sets the world on fire behind the arc to be a bonafide 2.

Agreed.

Reef grew on me a lot last season. I'm always skeptical of guards that don't shoot the three well, but he makes up for it by getting to the line at a very strong rate. He's a surprisingly efficient scorer that I think is easy to mistake for a volume shooter. He's also our best perimeter defender, if not our best defender period. I'd be fine with it if we ended up having to start him at the 1. Though, I'd be much more fine with it if we also had a 3 that was good with the ball in his hands and we could run possessions through to take the burden off. Maaaaybe Clayton can develop into a 4 that can do a bit of that. I'm sure that's what he'll spend the off-season working on.

Best case, I think, is a long true PG who can create offense and help make up for Reef's size deficit in the backcourt. But players like that are hard to come by at our level. Though, so are the types of 3s I'm talking about.

I might be in the minority here, but I thought Hadaway, especially toward the end of the year after he had time to gain more confidence in his capabilities, was one of the better playmakers on the team.

Only OUr three "6-foot point guards" - Hunter, M. Brown and Mitchell - averaged more assists per game. And all three played anywhere from 4 to 7 more minutes a game. If you were cutting through the lane or along the baseline, Hadaway found you. Conversely, I thought all year that Hadaway was the best on the team at cutting through the lane or along the baseline without the ball.

Hadaway can be the team's small forward if he improves his game as much from his sophomore season to his junior year as he did from freshman to sophomore. Perhaps an all-MAC player in the next year or two.

Very fair point. I do think he showed good vision last year. The gap to me seemed to be ball handling, and we didn't seem to run many actions that involved getting him the ball on the move. And against Akron in the tournament he looked very hesitant on a few different possessions where he caught the ball at the three point line in space.

I guess I'm officially leading the Ethan Morton hype train. As I said in the other thread, he would fill the small forward role perfectly. He would become our best defender and is a good passer. Not a scorer, but can hit an open look and could put up eight to ten points a game in a starting role. He wants to coach and has one year left, so he would be the perfect guy to show Hadaway what to do. And Hadaway could still provide that scoring punch off the bench when needed.

This is scenario where I think we could get away with starting a Morton (or another big/tall wing), Hadaway, and Clayton. We all know the latter is going to be spending most of his time beyond the arc anyway.
