Sometimes, though, as you may remember my humor can get a bit warped or so sarcastic that it goes over people's heads.
Ah, the OCF of old.

"Duhhhh, what does OCF mean with his last post? It's too deep for me to comprehend. Duhhh."
IF he takes the bait, I'll hand out the popcorn.

How often do we even promote to students with a giveaway gift or pregame food anymore? Seemed during the later Groce years we were always giving out a scarf or McDonalds or a pint glass and we got rock solid student turnouts even on weeknights.

We have an on campus arena right next to a residential quad. The demolition of New South dorms and replacement with the complex across from Ping brings students closer to the Convo. Off campus living isn't so bad that providing a shuttle from Stimson is going to bring hoards of students to games. Win, have exciting players, give some free Taco Johns occasionally.
They had quite a few last season. Some really nice stuff, some average things. The students who work for me just don't do the sports much. I finally convinced 3 to attend a game last season and they loved it (unfortunately it was the last home game). If you can get them there, they may like it.
I interned in our marketing department senior year during the Groce era. Items like replica jerseys and food from out of town (Chick-fil-a) were always huge draws -- even if a lot of students dipped at halftime.

Brooks Neal who oversaw all of us and marketing for a few years left halfway through winter quarter and it transitioned to Drake Bolon. Morale wasn't the same when Brooks left and given what happened with Drake, there probably hasn't been a lot of consistency within marketing/promotions since.

Like I'm actually shocked by the lack of students at games. They were always fun even with the in-game promotions, with it obviously being a bonus that the team had some March appearances during my years.

There are a lot of open seats in that area. If you look closely a fair amount of non-students are filling up the area. Not sure about that time period when you interned, my group of employees rarely read an email from Athletics. If I wasn't telling them about it, they would have no idea. The only time they ask anything is Dad's weekend or Sib's weekend.

Bummer about Davidson, but happy with the UNC-Asheville add. 22 wins a year ago and a tourney appearance before that.

Looks like it returns an experienced roster. Losing its top scorer, but the remaining top 5 players in terms of minutes and points after him returning.

Repeating myself, but I do think this is one of our better non-conference schedules.

I think it's an average one. Good that we don't waste a date with students on campus on the non-D1 game. Two home Saturday games against D1s with students on campus should be the minimum and we got it. I know we're making calls across the power conferences, but Memphis and maybe South Florida is not going to create much at-large buzz. Memphis is in complete disarray. I think that game is now a toss-up. And keep in mind we have the Sun Belt game in February which is a better spot than having another date in November/December. That's another home Saturday game, but when basketball enthusiasm is in full swing, and it won't be flexed to a Friday.

I'm not factoring in when the games are being played as part of the overall quality.

Looking at opponents only -- JMU, Memphis, Morehead, and potentially a game against USF would give us games against 4 tourney teams from a season ago. I say that acknowledging JMU's coach is now at Vandy and Morehead's is at JMU. Both seem to have reloaded, nonetheless.

Now we add an experienced UNC-Asheville team coming off 22 wins and a tourney appearance before that. AP won 19 games and returns its best player (among others) down the stretch on team that lost in the ASUN finals.

God forbid we do knock of USF, we're likely looking at Princeton who has an NBA prospect and is Ivy League favorites yet again. Muskingum and RMU are the only two stinkers. If we're winning more than not as expected, the second SBC game becomes that much better. There's a lot to like about this schedule IMO.

Aside from JMU and Memphis, that's a really winnable non-con. JMU will be tough. I wish that one was at home. Would be a fun one to pack the house and steal a win.

Maybe they decided on next year because it was too hard to fit in. I looked at that a few weeks ago and I can say that trying to find a time to play it would have resulted in something less than ideal.

I assume the lack of an announced exhibition at home means we are scrimmaging two D1 opponents or is this something yet to be scheduled?

For the second consecutive season, zero power four games and more home games than true road games. Great schedule for accumulating wins.

I'd rather have no Davidson than Davidson at "neutral site" in Charlotte or something.

On the other hand, if you live in Charlotte, you might be able to swing the Myrtle Beach Tournament. :)

I bet we’d be well over 11k for a game like this.

I think the schedule is strong. Still hate the non-division 1 game every year, but clearly, it will always be on the schedule. Davidson would have been a nice capper on the non-con slate, but I'm with FJC31...Morehead State and UNC Asheville are really good home adds. Much better than Eastern Illinois and Alabama State.

Agree about JMU. We need to keep working on getting them scheduled in the future. A Saturday game in December with the students in town would be top 3 gate of the year. JMU home games draw better than Ohio and their Saturday (drivable) road games are often top gate days for their opponents (ODU, App, etc). They travel extremely well. I'm confident OUr athletic department won't be dismissive of their draw.

I don't think we'll be able to dictate future scheduling with JMU since this is part of the Sun Belt/MAC challenge. It's going to happen by chance.

didnt realize it was part of the challenge. is that set for year over year? hope so. decent home and away each year. and again. too bad we didn’t get them home. would be a good crowd. will be interesting to see who we draw in the winter.

Without proper promotion, JMU is no different a draw than like Bucknell or Louisiana Tech. I'm sorry, solid program aside, they just aren't a name that will immediately register with people who don't actively follow college hoops. George Mason would have more cachet by virtue of going to the Final 4 almost 20 years ago. We had dunk city in our building on a Saturday only two years removed and didn't hit 6000.

i’m not suggesting they would draw more bobcat fans. i’m outlining that they would bring their fans. App st fans tell me they flooded the gym.

This question is for those of you that have some knowledge about non conference scheduling. How is it that the Bobcat women are able to schedule at least two power four programs and the men do not have one power four program on the schedule the last two seasons?
