Some ways to help get a few more older locals to show up....

Have disabled parking that is not behind a barricade and unable to be used, and if no handicapped spaces are available, don't charge them to park.

Don't try to make a senior citizen who could be on a fixed income buy a 4-pack of season tickets to retain the price per they were paying for two.

Have beer for less than $8 a can. Half of MLB stadiums had $5 beer last season and look at the payroll those organization have to contend with.

These and others matters were brought to the attention of the ticket office guy who seemed very dismissive of the concerns.

And obviously have more than one D-1 game in the month of December, with the understanding that teams have turned chicken 5hit to come play here.
What makes you think the student answering the phone at the ticket office has any idea what goes into the price of beer?

I get it. I donate in order to get to the purple lot for my dad and neighbor to walk in easily. My dad will be 83 and my neighbor is mid 70's. Kind of a long walk no matter where you park. They have to do something to get people here. Just a team isn't doing it apparently.
If you park in the area facing the Ridges hill, there would be an easier way to get into the gym than walking almost halfway around the building, up and down and up again. If they wanted to put an iota of thought and effort into it.

It's the thought that they don't give a flying **** about such things.

I think we'd like to avoid going that far out of town on finals week but after looking at Ohio's, Austin Peay's, Davidson's, and the Hornet's schedules I'm thinking Austin Peay 12/3 and Davidson probably 12/11. I'm probably going to be wrong but it feels hard to make this work another way without moving games or playing around Christmas or Christmas Eve in something other than a Holiday Tournament. They'd probably try to avoid the latter even more but who knows.

We haven't had much of a crowd in a while. Seems the schedule doesn't fit in with the fan's lives or interest is down. Always surprised to see the small crowds we get. I try to get my student employees to go and have had some success, but not much. They do not even follow the team or know who is on it. Need to get the student population interested so we will have fans going on in the future. My section is starting to look old.
Threats of crappy weather and just the general dreariness of winter in SE Ohio plays a big part in that. I come down for just about every football game and a few hockey games but the thought of driving to a Tuesday or Friday night basketball game in January or February has limited appeal with or without snow.

Season hasn't started, but it's never too early for my MOVE THE STUDENT SECTION TO THE TV CAMERA SIDE post. (or move the camera to the other concourse)

On TV it looks like the nursing home and a 2 for 1 deal, when the student section is usually pretty packed. If kids turned on the TV and saw a 'packed house' on TV, they might be more interested in being a part of it. They also reserve a chunk for visiting fans/family behind the visiting bench and they rarely use it all, so the TV shows older season ticket holders - who don't show up, and the visiting family - who also rarely show up.

We should also have GA for everywhere other than friends and family section. And that section should be moved and condensed. Hasn't OU led the MAC in attendance every year under Boals? In a 13K seat arena with people spread out all over the place it looks like 400 people are there instead of 4,000. Close off the upper bowl, black out the lights, move everybody down to the lower bowl.

These are actually really solid ideas. I remember the first time I went to ESPN's Friday Night Fights back in the 90s. Having watched it on television, I just assumed it was always a fairly big crowd. We came to watch Buster Douglas and there were only a few thousand people, if that, there BUT, the way the seats were sold and the cameras focused, all you saw on television was what looked like a full house. Most all of the cameras were on the "empty" side of the venue and 90% of the crowd were in bleachers on the opposite side of that. There were tables all around the ring. 3/4 of the arena was bare but tv never showed that at all. Seeing what I saw in person vs. what I saw on VHS when I got home was wild.

Athens hasn’t had snow in two years. Swank has played more January rounds of golf than the local schools have missed days probably.

You're kinda missing my point. I'm saying that with or without snow, driving to Athens from places like Chillicothe, Jackson, Marietta, and the like sucks. They need to change up something to get bodies in there.

I mean, if that’s the biggest hurdle… and hear me out… cause it’s a doozy… you pick up the foldable chairs and move the benches to the other side.

Or you could just set the camera up facing the other direction. Not all universities have cameras facing the benches. Duke comes to mind. It’s facing the student section.

It’s not some insurmountable feat.

And despite your sarcasm, yes - some students could and should be behind the benches. If it helps fill empty seats.

The bigger issue is the student bleachers vs old farts chairs. Obviously our highest paying customers aren't going to give up their comfy seats for bleachers. The only real solution is moving the camera angle, and given the media tables are on the student side that isn't super easy either but a solution could probably be had.

If our student section was what it was 15-25 years ago I'd say make it happen but as of now our student section isn't exactly eye popping TV either.

I'm not sure the bodies will come. So many excuses of why people cannot attend. Basketball just doesn't draw people in like it did before. The students do not show up even though they give stuff away to them.

As already stated, a better parking situation for those who are deserving of such along with a shorter easier entrance to arena for them, beer at $5 not $8, not requiring the purchase of 4 tickets to retain the price per people had for one or two, having more than one D-1 out of conference game in December, and not being dismissively blown off when bringing up the concerns.

As far as getting students to show up better, have a shuttle bus to where they don't have to walk from almost Stimson to the Convo in potentially crappy weather. (as much as nearly 1.5 miles each way for some)

Actually remote parking with a free shuttle for adult locals maybe too.

You expect an athletic department that can't arrange for shuttle buses in Detroit for a bowl game will institute a shuttle bus program in Athens for basketball games. Dream on!

No, I don't expect it to happen.

Even suggesting it would be met with a dismissive "who cares" attitude, so expect "crowds" that reflect said attitude.

Stansbury was the HC at WKU the night Saul chased the refs off the court at the end. The officiating was not the best but on the other hand Saul's coaching that night wasn't so hot either (should have kept a time-out for the end).

How often do we even promote to students with a giveaway gift or pregame food anymore? Seemed during the later Groce years we were always giving out a scarf or McDonalds or a pint glass and we got rock solid student turnouts even on weeknights.

We have an on campus arena right next to a residential quad. The demolition of New South dorms and replacement with the complex across from Ping brings students closer to the Convo. Off campus living isn't so bad that providing a shuttle from Stimson is going to bring hoards of students to games. Win, have exciting players, give some free Taco Johns occasionally.

You miss out on MAC rules that bars student sections from being behind the bench. Don’t need sarcasm, just facts.

And I didn’t even feel I needed to mention that the seats are different. Good luck getting Gold Seat money for a bleacher. But hey, keep them ideas coming!

Thanks. I do have a sense of humor, and I can laugh at myself when warranted. Sometimes, though, as you may remember my humor can get a bit warped or so sarcastic that it goes over people's heads.

They had quite a few last season. Some really nice stuff, some average things. The students who work for me just don't do the sports much. I finally convinced 3 to attend a game last season and they loved it (unfortunately it was the last home game). If you can get them there, they may like it.

As I've said before, I upped my donation to park better for the two going with me. My parking is good. As for the beer, I'm fine with it. I wish they would bring back the pint give away with a beer purchase. That was nice. I guess they could bring in Natty Light as the students still like that. I just wish they had some other food options. Why we do Taco Johns before we arrive.
