If John Groce is a massive upgrade from Chris Mack, why didn’t USF hire him?
Can't recall who, but last week one of the College BBall "insiders" tweeted that Groce overplayed his hand with USF, so they were pivoting to Mack.

Happy as hell for him. Hard to believe this is his first head coaching gig. I feel like he's 84 years old (Not even 50). Awesome to see another OU guy join the head coaching ranks. With that said, I hope we do to you what Groce did to us for the last decade.

And damn - what a retirement plan for Groce. Go make a $1M and live at the beach. Nice.

I'll take a wait-and-see attitude about Groce's chances of doing well at Charleston. He didn't exactly set the world on fire at Illinois.

Helps having your toughest challenge be UNC Wilmington instead of Michigan State.

Much different situation. No Chicago AAU situation in Charleston like there is/was in Illinois.

Charleston since the 2016-17 season has achieved seven 20 plus win seasons and one season with thirty plus wins. Mack and Kelsey parlayed the Cougars job into a much higher profile job. Groce should win at Charleston. I wouldn’t bet the farm on Groce doing poorly in Charleston.

I'm not betting the farm on him doing poorly, but I'm also not betting the farm on him doing well.

Another bed & breakfast deal ala TOS. Take the vacation gig, buy the B&B and when you are fired there is built in passive income to be made.

Several days passed between Groce being named in connection with Charleston and his announcement. Then like a day later Ford is announced at UA. Sounds like Groce wanted there to be a succession plan in place for Ford and the UA players.

Groce told UA he was leaving on 3/30. Ford named replacement on 3/31.

Who is asking to cut football a level? I'm not. I have in the past, but that argument is more about the realities of competing against the peers in your own division. This discussion is about money.

I'm saying stay right where we are. But reduce the monetary investment into football some (not entirely) and simultaneously use football for what it is good for - and thats NOT competing/winning but it IS making money. So maximize revenue. Play 4 road P4 football buy games every year OOC. Nobody cares if you start 0-4 every year. You cash the checks.

Reduce spending on football by $1-2M a year. Add 2 more buy games at $2M+ per and magically we have an extra $5-7M to reinvest into other sports like basketball.

Nobody has to "pay up". Its just reprioritizing assets to maximize competitiveness.
What you proposed is laughable! What football coach would want to open with four power four programs and give away those checks? Good luck trying to find a football staff that is willing to do what you suggested. Why should the football program, who has won forty games the last four seasons take a back seat to basketball? The football program is at the top of the conference compared to annual fifth place finishes for the basketball program. I’m still laughing at your proposal!! And nobody cares if you start 0-4 every season. Half the posters on this forum would be calling for the head coach to be fired if that happened.

I'm not betting the farm on him doing poorly, but I'm also not betting the farm on him doing well.
In the last 5 years at Akron, Groce has won:

29 games
28 games
24 games
22 games
24 games

At Akron. He had this program in Athens in a Sweet 16 and a squad coming back the next year, had he not left, poised to have a tremendous season. Groce has proven he can run a conference like the MAC. I would not bet a dime on him failing at Charleston.

Whatever we're doing is fine with me. When I'm able to attend a game it brings back great memories of my time in Athens, and it's a great time win or lose. The players and coaches all want to win and give it their best every time.

I do agree that we should be playing more games above our pay grade for hoops and football. It helps attract recruits when they see us playing a better schedule. It also challenges the players and makes them better. In the years every blue moon when we have a great team, it may help us get a better bowl or win a few games in the NCAA tourney. Look at Miami this year. Playing Little Sisters of the Poor did not help them at all. They had a fine team, but were not challenged. Then there is the money, but that's last on my list.

Miami didn’t play one power four program this season. However, they played two Big Ten schools last season. How many power four programs did Ohio play in the two years prior to this season? I beg to differ that the schedule Miami played didn’t “help them at all.” Miami was ranked in the top 25 and top 20 for several weeks. They won an NCAA tourney game and went unbeaten in the regular season. They won the conference. Oh yeah what Miami accomplished this season didn’t bring attention to the MAC and notoriety to Miami. Keep dreaming!

They went 31-0 and lost 2 of the next 3. They were killed by Tennessee. I guess that weak schedule really helped them when it counted.

When is the last time Ohio went unbeaten in the regular season, won a conference title, won an NCAA tourney game and was ranked in the top 20 all in the same season? In the college world today where NIL poaches the best players, I think Miami had a great season that will be hard pressed to duplicate in future years.

It also helped them get their new arena approved.

This 100%. We can disparage them all we want, but I'm pretty sure we would take this gladly right now over watching whatever crap we have going on.

Also, been hearing a lot of rumblings Todd K at Toledo has been a groundhog coming out of the hole in terms of looking for jobs, could explain why his guys are hitting portal big time this offseason.

Que Sera, Sera.

I simply think playing a better schedule helps all around, no matter the outcome.

It's felt like he had good chances to try out the greener grass in the past few years when Toledo had better seasons. Seems odd to me that he'd be looking for an exit after (by their standards lately) a sort of mediocre season.

Does it? The Fire Boals thread is twenty pages long.

If they played Miami's horrible non-con and OU won 24 or 25 games it would be three pages long with only two posters talking about Ablin and the AD.
