If it's not being awarded retroactively, does that mean that it also would affect those who have already started? If their career starts before this takes effect, would the student still have to finish five years after turning 19? Meaning if Che starts before this is official, is he still under those restrictions?
This was my thought as well. I think the proposed simplified 5 year rule would just be implemented with incoming players going forward, so if they solidify it before the fall it would only apply to NCAA newcomers in 26-27, anyone who spent time in the NCAA before then would still fall under the old/current rules.
Fresh off the press today: https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/48847276/n... . I think this is the first time that they’ve said anything about how this would get implemented for those currently with eligibility.

“The NCAA said on Friday that athletes whose fourth year of college eligibility was completed by spring 2026 would not be given any more eligibility under the new model. It would also give flexibility to currently enrolled athletes with eligibility after the 2025-26 academic year to apply the age-based model or continue previous eligibility rules, whichever is more beneficial to that individual”

This means KDA would get 2 years of eligibility coming into the year instead of 1 under the previous rule. I think he is the only one on the roster for next season who would benefit from this because all of the other non international players have had redshirt years.

I'm sad to see the days of HS kids growing through a program, but I'll be damned if I'm not excited to see that Boals is turning over every rock, including a couple early 20's pros. Will be interesting to see how this all comes together. Three international pros. An all-league mid-major shooter. A nice piece from Idaho. The MAC's Will Wade. Do what you need to do to get results in this era. Let's go!
Next up: Weak pre-MAC schedule to get Ws and fan interest up.

Should also consider just using walk ons for rest of roster. We’ve got 9-10 dudes and that’s all you need.

No. NOW is the time to raid the D-2/d-3/NAIA/JUCO ranks or late bloomer high school guys who were passed over. Like....

Westerville North senior guard Elijah McCree, the Division II district and state Player of the Year, has committed to play college basketball at Cedarville.

That would have been one. I thought Boals loved recruiting Columbus. Where else can you combine a visit to IKEA with a recruiting trip nearby?

We’ve been contact with Middle Georgia State (D2) transfer Krishen Atwell. 6’6 wing who averaged 14ppg, but only shot 31% from 3.

Atwell is now receiving interest from George Mason, Texas A&M, Wyoming.

Speculation -- Moek Icke is our next incoming transfer. He's following Boals, Ohio Men's Basketball, and Casey Crawford. Vice versa.

7'1 Netherlands kid who spent this past season (two in total) at Rhode Island as a redshirt. Didn't suit up for URI. Not a lot on him statistically. Looks like he averaged 6ppg and 5rpg two years ago for Netherlands FIBA U18 team.

Had a heart surgery his freshman year according to this article....

Would certainly fill the concern of having a true big on the floor.

Would certainly fill the concern of having a true big on the floor.
Archie Miller (yes, that one) had a lot of good things to say about him, just digging around old articles.

"Icke runs the floor well and can protect the rim. When asked about his strengths on the court, he said, “I am a big presence on the court and can impact the ball underneath. I also like shooting the three.”

He continued, “Basketball is much more physical in the US, and I like that. Don’t underestimate me by thinking I am a soft European.”

When asked about Icke, coach Archie Miller said, “We’re taking it very slow, and we will have another update on him at the end of the month. He’s a good player, and he’s an unbelievable kid. We are crossing our fingers that he can continue to make progress this fall. He’s a big kid that’s going to be good.”

Last year, Icke weighed 220 pounds. He now weighs 250. He also has a 7'5" inch wing span.

We live in an era where seven-footers can and will shoot threes. Just how it be. They grew watching Dirk Nowitski splash from anywhere.

If Icke is reeled in, I can handle an occasional 3PA. Just be able to provide interior defense and rebounding for enough minutes a game.

At this stage in the portal and with all we've brought in, he's the type of player we should take a stab at. Considering average D2 players are landing 6 figures.

He actually could be a nice change of pace from Javan banging down low. Opposing bigs forget they have to guard both inside and out when the other guy comes in. Not the worst thing to have, as long as he's not jacking 6 threes a game and bricking them.

If he can hit a few jump shots from the elbow or top of the key, that creates some high-low opportunities with Javan inside if this tall kid has some passing skills and most European guys traditionally have that.

Here’s a 2 year old clip. Def more than a 7’1 guy beneath the basket. 3PT stroke doesn’t look bad at all.

October is 5 months away and thus plenty of time to eat lots of protein and pump lots of iron.

I recall several Home Coming parades and watching the international students with a good number from western Europe. Talked to them each year and they said they always have lots of fun in Athens and have been enjoying their experiences. Good place for a kid to land.

Go Bobcats: land this seven footer!

I love the idea of a 7 footer draining threes. Unfortunately our recent experience is bigs who insist on hoisting 3s at low make rates at the sacrifice of doing the necessary work in the paint...so you can understand the pause we feel when we read that.

I kind of hope our last schollie goes to another international player (BPA) because it'd just be fun at this point to lean into it more.

Get a guard who can defend at this level right now.

100% agree. Kolten graded out as comparable defender (similar DRtg and DBPM numbers) to Reef's final season this past year. KDA is not so strong defensively. his DPBM was -2.8. Kolten's was .5 and Reef's was .6 which indicates a "decent starter defender".

Ilija Miljasevic is a player we've been connected to who'd fit that need (coincidence he's international). Similar DRtg and DBPM numbers to Reef in his final year at Creighton playing similar minutes. 36% from 3PT this year in limited time and averaged 2spg over two FIBA seasons. Per 40 shows nearly 3spg.

Still available.

The more I look into Che Brogan I think there’s a chance he ends up being a really strong defensive piece that can guard anybody 1-3. Looking at his international play (https://basketball.realgm.com/player/Che-Brogan/Summary/2... ) and NBL1 (https://www.nbl1.com.au/player-listing/che-brogan-4668d7a... ) he’s consistently had very high steal rates and decent AST:TO ratios. The thing keeping him from being a starter would be his scoring and shooting numbers. I think he at least ends up being a rotational guard as a playmaking defender who could get more minutes depending on the matchup.

Still generally agree that another 2/3 that can defend would be nice but I can’t imagine there’s a ton of budget left for that last spot.

Need a kid from Asia, Africa, or South America to really give the UN a run for their money.
