I'd like to couple it with more shooting, but I suspect that's the hardest skill to land these days.
This is my thought as well. In past years, size was in high demand and still is. However, it seems like 3PT shooting is going quickly in the portal this year and at a premium. I posted about UNCG's Lilian Marville (51% 3pt shooting) entering the portal 2 days ago and he's already committed to George Mason.

If Bates is the next add and that seems inevitable now (add Burris and Chase Boals to the previous following group), that gives us 3 schollies left. To me, two shooters and another big would be the best allocation.

We were in on a few D2 shooters early on, I wonder if any of those come into fruition now. Also curious to see if the staff continues to explore oversea options to fill out the rest of the roster. I've noticed Boals is following a number of international agents and agencies. Nice to see the turning over every rock approach in roster building, I like what we've done so far as well.
Is Chase actually coming back? I thought his career was done due to inherited knee issues and is getting into coaching via team manager? He wasn't even on the roster last season.

No idea, I'm sure he's just involved with the program because of dad and still in school.

High school teammate of Mosley. LSU has no one on its roster as it stands now.

Assist heavy, not great shooting point guards can absolutely work if you have guys at the 2 & 3 that are a threat with their outside shot. Not sure we have that (yet).
For sure, I don’t think the stating 3 is on the roster yet. If you are running a lineup of:
PG: Bates
SG: KDA
Wing: Unknown
PF1: Simmons
PF2: Dusan

That wing spot has to be someone capable of shooting at least 35% from 3 and the offense becomes very dangerous. That gives you an elite playmaker leading the offense, a secondary playmaker in KDA, 2 shooters in the SG and SF, and two elite inside players with Simmons and Dusan. If that Wing spot is a shooter, that will create spacing and what could be a very balanced offense. In a perfect world that spot is a 40% shooter and elite defensive player, but those guys I would imagine are very expensive.

I also like what the staff has done thus far, Jeff said he was resetting the program and is clearly trying a new approach. The international guys could come with some volatility, as I would imagine scouting is wildly different than a typical college transfer or high school recruit, but there is real upside in a rev share era where they may be cheaper.
I agree that the key to this lineup's success is having a starting-caliber knock-down shooter at the 3. You and others have convinced me of the vision of Bates at the 1 / KDA at the 2 (with Brogan off the bench), and the free-flowing offense that could follow. But even with two shot-creators, and as good as Simmons/Makitan could be down low, I struggle to see the offense being particularly dangerous without another shooter. Simmons and Makitan will likely be non-factors beyond the arc, while Bates--even if better than last year's numbers indicate--projects as an average, streaky shooter. That leaves KDA as the only real knock-down threat that defenses need to key on. However, if we do manage to grab this missing piece, I agree that the offense could be dangerous.

Agree completely that they need a proven shooter at the 3 for it to work. To keep selling Bates, Louisiana Tech last year had one of the worst offenses in the country. They were 359/365 in 3pt% (worse than us, believe it or not), 265/365 in 2pt%, and 341/365 in FT%. As the primary ball carrier and playmaker, that put him in a spot where he had to run an offense with virtually no help from anywhere, and managed to make the most of a bad lineup while probably being forced to take a lot of bad shots himself. To have that role on that team with the AST/TO ratio he did is wildly impressive. I’m not saying he turns into a 50/40 guy for us, but it isn’t unreasonable to think he could be a 45/low 30s shooting splits guy with good offensive players around him. There’s intriguing guys on the roster who could maybe turn into a good 3 (Kuany has a lot of potential but is completely raw) but they really need a proven guy for that role.

The Boals kid was a team manger and based on what little he shown when in uniform that’s the best spot for him. Bench cheerleader at best.

Well, this is awkward. Bates to Utah State. Wonder if a last minute offer came in. A lot of smoke with all of our staff, players (doubt he knows who Dusan is otherwise), and even following the hoops page. Seems like we might have a verbal in place and perhaps Utah State whiffed on a first choice and pivoted with more money.

Edit — my contact confirmed Bates was initially in the fold.

What’s even more awkward is that tweet…apparently he is transferring both FROM Utah State and TO Utah State!

Maybe he's like that QB we had from Okie State who transferred here, then to Alabama and then to Okie Junior College and Guppie Ranch all in the matter of a month or so.

We’ve expressed interest in JUCO transfer Kenyon Giles out of Florida Southwestern State. 15ppg and 34% from 3pt. 6’0 and originally from Cleveland.

Would be a good depth piece without rolling out a Brinks (tm) truck to get.

MVP!? Color me very impressed. I know the Bosnian league isn't a European superpower, but if he's the best player there, he should certainly be one of the top players in the MAC.

I keep having to remind myself that, while technically a freshman, this is a 21-year-old with several years' experience against what is, at the very least, superior physical competition to mid-major college ball.

Other than the seven-foot JUCO guy, I don't know what we have cooking at the moment.

We have expressed interest in UT-Arlington's Cash Chavis. 6-2 guard averaged 10.5 per game on 38% shooter but averaged 3.5 assists. Poor three point shooter at 28%. Somewhat highly-rated recruit who originally signed with Arkansas but played only one game.

I was told we're trying for a Belgium kid. Seems to check out -- poking around staff (Boals, Lamar, Crawford) following, that appears to be Siebe Ledegen. Plays in BNXT League and also played for Belgium's World Cup team.

Put up 14ppg in BNXT League this season while shooting 40% from 3PT (33/82). He'd fit the wing size we're looking for at 6'6. He's also 23.

https://www.proballers.com/basketball/player/181954/siebe...

Other than that, I noticed once Bates committed to Utah State that Boals has since started following Jacob Meyer (UAB), Kolton Mitchell (Idaho), and Chance Gladdon (Boston). We're definitely still in the market for another PG/ball handler.

All of three have been in the portal for nearly a month. Meyer was a portal darling two offseason's ago after his freshman year at Coastal Carolina. Transferred up to DePaul, then back down to UAB. Shooting numbers plummeted. I've seen him play live, he's a shot creator for sure but he's still available for a reason. Would be banking on a bounce back to Coastal numbers here.

Chance Gladdon looks like the strongest at surface, but advance numbers don't love him. I've seen on X that's had some P5 Zoom calls.

Kolton Mitchell had a strong season and advanced numbers like him more in comparison to the other two. Of the three, he's the only one to have all of a positive offensive win share, defensive win share, offensive box plus/minus, defensive box plus/minus, and box plus minus.

Idaho also won the Big Sky Tournament this year. Mitchell put 14 against Houston in the opening round game and shot 3/6 from 3PT. I'm kind of surprised he's still available even if he's only 6'1.

The latter 3 are speculatory and Siege is apparently someone we're trying to get over here. No idea how close or if it's a for sure thing. Something to talk about nonetheless.

Looks like the 3 portal options were short lived, as Boals is no longer following any of the 3. The Belgian guy could still be in the mix and is following Lamar and Boals, but is not following any guys on the team. Really thought we had Bates, he was following everyone on the team and even Jeff’s daughter. It makes sense that Utah State likely came in at the final hour.

Of those 3 portal guys I did see a few random Idaho games last year on ESPN+ and Mitchell is a player but he talks A LOT during games. Imagine the amount of jawing that Hadaway does during a game and triple it. Had it worked out he is a very good player but the act would have gotten annoying. And to address the obvious question, why was I watching Idaho games? To be true to my name, I’ve built an algorithm that I use to bet some games each week during the season and for whatever reason Idaho popped up in that a lot last year.

I should have specified. Boals is following those 3 on X, not IG. However; Gladdon has since committed to San Diego State.

Siebe is followed by Boals, Lamar, Casey Crawford, and Jake Ness (DOBO) and vice versa on IG. Jake is a new one.

Interesting note on Mitchell. Numbers not worth the potential trash talking?

If ESPN's stats are correct he's not had a single technical or ejection in 3 years of college ball. Fouled out twice in 3 years (76 games).

MAC refs might be quicker to T him up but you never can tell. They let Steele have a Bobby Knight-worthy hissy fit at WMU that night and didn't toss him.

Honestly this was my way of coping with what I thought was a quick no from the player. Probably a classic case of something that only becomes an issue of the team isn’t good. If he commits I’d immediately floor to justify how good of a player he is.

Not sure it’s a quick no. Lamar, Chase Boals, and Jake Ness are now following him on IG/vice versa. Hopefully a sign of good things to come.

^Played for three different high schools including two preps. Decommitted from Wasington and now is leaving Ole Miss. Be cool to get a McDonald's All American for a year but a perpetual one foot out the door player.
