Not hugely surprised. Basically no playing time for a coach who consistently uses a very short rotation and is on the hot seat. Stay another year and don't break into the rotation and basically any recruiting buzz you had is gone.

Evans and Walking Bucket…on deck.

This staff is such an epic failure at recruiting and developing HS talent.

Evans, Burris and I predict Kuany are gonzo. Maybe even Kelly. Wish Fisher got time. What does this mean for his 2 Reynoldsburg boys? I like McKinney.

Don’t worry BobcatSports. Jeff and his elite staff of recruiters have things well under control heading into their lame duck season.

I don't know why people keep predicting Burris. If I had to pick one player most likely to return it would be him. He was given consistent chances his Freshman season, even at times when it felt bizarre. He did not do remotely well enough to attract any attention to secure a move up or even a lateral move. He sees our PG & SG both graduate, and has a coach that clearly believes in him. I don't understand why people think he would move on.

Now that I said all that, I would expect an announcement from him this morning just to make me look like a fool.

I think he's likely to stay. He has a good opportunity here to grow. And get minutes. With that said, literally nothing would be a surprise. It's hard to imagine what every coach, every recruiter is saying in America. We can offer people playing time - Florida can offer you a bench spot and a practice jersey and that's pretty damn appealing to some. Even Duke needs practice bodies.

Burris and Mosley for growth and bench continuity. Bring on a whole mess of transfers.
:(

Fisher didn't play anywhere near enough. Not that surprising. This hurts though.

It would make more sense long term, but I'm guessing it's sort of "just one more year" thought to avoid paying the buyout.

What about the Fisher transfer makes this a dumpster fire? It's unclear why that tilts the balance.

The kid couldn't crack the rotation of a .500 also-ran in the MAC. If we think he's really good, then it was already a dumpster fire when Boals refused to play him this year. If we think Boals' rotation reflects Fisher's talent, it seems like this is fine.

What am I missing? Or are we basically at the point where everything that happens to Ohio basketball reflects that Jeff Boals is doing a bad job?

My own speculation -- that we have a coach in a contract year who has to rebuild a roster in one offseason due to years of failed recruiting and only has two returnees with meaningful minutes. Doable? For sure. Likely? Eh.

Right, but we have to rebuild the roster. We all know that. And that means creating space for new players.

To me, relying on a guy who couldn't crack the rotation on a bad team is a much riskier move than trying to replace him with a guy whose body of work you can see against better competition.

Burris and Evans couldn't even be walk-ons at most SEC schools.

Potter played 56 games in two years at fiami.
He dressed out but didn't play in a single game at UK this season.
Tomorrow at 4:20pm the world will see the talent level difference between the MAC's unbeaten team and the middle of the pack SEC.

Agreed. It's just a wild situation but makes the portal season all the more interesting.

If we subtract Sheldon, Hadaway, Pavs, Conners, and Breath with Bowens and McKinney incoming. That would have been 3 schollies available initially. So, we're now up to 6?

That's quite a portal haul needed, assuming it doesn't get any bigger.

I predict Simmons will announce his departure in the next week. His value has never been higher and the situation here is going to be butt-ugly.

I mentioned on here about a week ago about speaking with Simmons and coach Thornton at high school district finals games in Columbus. I debated sharing something Thornton said about Fisher before deciding not to. Now that he's off OUr roster, I'll paraphrase what he said when I told him that I think of Fisher as an athlete - "He might be a high school athlete, but not a college athlete."

I had a brief conversation with Chase Boals a week later at the regional finals in Columbus. One thing of note he shared was that McKinney played some pickup basketball with the Ohio players (he didn't mention when but I suspect before the 25-26 season) in the Convo and was at times the best player on the court.

Edit: Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but from what Chase B. told me last Saturday and what Simmons told me the Saturday before that, I believe Simmons will return.

Boals wanted to keep him. Fisher and his family had simply had enough. The way this staff has stranded kids on the bench, offering zero opportunity to gain confidence and prove their value...absolute malpractice.

Yes exactly that.

The reactions have been as though Simmons & Kelly entered the portal. Nothing has happened yet that means pretty much anything. All of Fisher, Elliott & Evans can only hope for a lateral move at best, most will likely take a step down.

I'm mostly just hoping for Simmons and Kelly to return, and nervously checking in every now and then to see. Whatever else comes we can deal with. It's already apparent this will be the most turned over Bobcat roster I can recall seeing.

Did you ask why Fisher was offered in the first place? Weird thing to say about someone you gave a scholarship to about a year ago.

I can't get on board with this line of thinking. We were a senior laden team that played a 9 man rotation pretty much all season. No one is going to run a 13 man rotation. Fisher had a ton of experience in front of him and a teammate in Kelly who grabbed attention and playing time early. It happens and there is nothing "malpractice" about it. The only case where it may have been malpractice is if the coaches didn't communicate to him that they still believe in him and have plans for him next year and beyond. If Boals & co believed that, I am certain they did all that. And if they didn't, I am certain they welcome this as good news after getting a closer look at him in the program for a year.

Not starting over at your 3rd school in 3 years probably.

Huge increase in production when he finally settled into the offense.

As always, kids can and will leave for any and all reasons, but if I was in his ear I’d be telling him to come back and be P1 and contend for a POY. But for most of these kids, the NBA isn’t calling so maybe just stepping up into the best program that offers could be worth it. Would AJ rather be sitting at home right now having averaged 15 a game or is making an ncaa tournament run at the end of the bench good enough? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
