People don't appreciate how much time/energy Boals has to expend checking under the university community's couch cushions to keep his program afloat.
Honestly, it's a little hard to by sympathetic here.

I shared an auditor's official review of our athletic budget and the operating revenue for the basketball program was ~$2.9m. Boals' salary is about 30% of that.

I know he's not running a traditional business. But the idea of a top exec at a company that burns cash paying themselves 30% of operating funds would be malpractice if you were running an actual company. A board would typically suggest 8-10% for the entire C-Level.

Maybe he'd have more time to focus on coaching basketball and not budget stuff if he was paid in line with the dude at Toledo who he's 1-12 against.
Are you saying he should have turned down the money the university offered him? Second, I don't believe NIL funds are reflected in operating budget. I'd bet Miami has 2x what we have for basketball.
They do not. They lost Kraft to money. They got lucky in that Tudor and Elmer said they would stay for free. Although each got a little something.

Truth hurts SBH! You were a huge supporter of the former AD and the way she mistreated employees. You know she treated Coach Boals differently. How else can you explain her making Boals the top paid coach in the league and ignoring what the two time MAC football coach of the year accomplished? Guessing you don't mind ending up as a fifth seed or an occasional third seed yearly for the amount of money Boals is earning? By the way, your memory must be slipping. I have told you before, no relation to Coach Albin. I'm just a fan who appreciated a MAC football title for the first time in over a half of century and an unprecedented three consecutive ten win seasons.

Those of you still working(and by the time you have on your hands to make ridiculous comments, maybe few still are),
- if you’re in sales and didn’t close every deal
- are a lawyer and didn’t win every case
- are an engineer and didn’t make a fortune on every project
- in medicine and didn’t create a cure for every ailment
- etcetera, etcetera…..

Then you should all be FIRED!!

This is so unbelievably dumb, my man. Nobody is expecting perfection from Jeff Boals.

It's very telling that neither you nor Billy -- the two folks here who seem most insistent the idea that Boals isn't performing is ridiculous -- are actually making a case for Boals that has anything to do with basketball.

Instead, you're both insisting that nobody on this board has the credibility to have an opinion. If you could make the case for Boals, you would. Instead, you attack the posters.

Not a great sign for Jeff Boals that even his defenders can't make a case for his actual performance.

12 games left and the current record sits at 10-9. Here's who Ohio has remaining:

NIU x2
Akron
at Kent State
at Buffalo
WMU
at Old Dominion
Miami x2
Ball State
Toledo
at UMass

There is a very real possibility that Ohio finishes at .500 or losing record.

I think there's a very real possibility they lose 8 of those 12. I hope I'm wrong, but let's be realistic... We struggle in road games, ALL road games. We don't consistently beat the upper-echelon teams in the MAC. Losing 8 of those 12 is very possible.

Man, if that happens, BillyTheCat sure is going to be very critical of this board's talent evaluation skills.

Don't know coach Boals at all. Seems very likeable. He's won the MACC and an NCAA game which got Ohio a lot of publicity. His teams regularly finish the MAC regular season in the top 4 including 2nd just last year. And, when you are top 4 team you are a threat to in in Cleveland. A coach like that doesn't need to be fired. At all. Don't need to make any sort of other detailed case.

Now, if there is a few years of 5-6-7th place finishes then the seat gets hot at Ohio for sure, no matter who the coach is.

These game by game overreaction posts crack me up. Settle down fellas. Its a struggle this year. Streaky team. Nobody knows what next year holds. Could easily bring in transfers and win the MAC. Nobody knows.....

Go Bobcats.

He didn't finish 2nd last year, he finished 4th. Here, let's do Boals' MAC finishes in chronological order just so it's clear.

5th
5th (won MAC tournament)
3rd
5th
tied for 2nd
tied for 4th
current season: 4th

He has just as many 5th place finishes as he does top 4.

Try again.

You're also completely burying the lede of his overall performance by just talking about his MAC record. He's only had 2 seasons of 20+ wins overall. With as dreadful as the MAC has been, having as many 5th place finishes as Top 4 finishes is pretty mediocre for the amount that Ohio is paying him.

Digging even further, if you take out seasons that feature Jason Preston, Ben Vander Plas, Jason Carter or Mark Sears, his overall record is 65-52 (37-24 MAC) with two MAC semifinals losses. Outside of the NCAA Tournament win, Boals has never been to a MAC championship final. And then you get into his record vs. the big 3 of the MAC (Akron, Kent and Toledo). And then you look at the dreadful OOC losses that should have been wins.

I've been on the side that I think the talent is there on the roster (especially this season) and it has just been completely mismanaged and/or underdeveloped. That falls on Boals, no ifs, ands or buts about it. The decision to keep playing guys more minutes than they should be is on Boals. The decisions to not develop a stretch 4 into more of a paint threat is on Boals. Not recruiting a backup PG for Paveletzke is on Boals. Relying on little guards 6'2" and under to guard 6'6" wings is on Boals. Not giving more minutes to high impact transfers that you recruited is on Boals.

2867 last night. I'm assuming season tickets (seats) are still counted regardless of showing up or not. I can't remember seeing a figure that low in ages.

7 Saturday games last year. 4 home Saturday games this year. Personally, that's affecting my attendance for sure. I normally don't attend the games that move to Friday night for TV b/c it's not worth the 5 hour round trip from Canton...but I'm coming to the game on Friday. Mostly to justify my 6 season tickets to my wife!

Boeh was fairly accurate - Jeff McKinney and I can attest to that. Schaus - not even close.

You make an excellent point and for a school that relies on local folks for the weekday games, going up against the long standing tradition of high school boys hoops didn't help.

Which also pokes a hole in the so called value of being on TV so potential recruits can see you. On a Friday at 8, most high school kids are playing in a varsity contest for their school.

I think this is more of a MAC issue than anything. I have no idea why a conference based in Ohio would voluntarily choose to put their games on the same days as high school basketball games during the week, all but guaranteeing you'll fight with them for fans even if it is a small number. I don't remember it being like that when I was in school and can't remember when they made the switch.

I'm only one fan, but I canceled my ESPN+ subscription this year, which I kept only to watch OHIO football and basketball games. I never missed a basketball game. Now, I forget they're even scheduled as I've become less attached to college sports when I can't build any allegiance to players over a sustained time. When you hear players like Carson Beck at Miami talking about how they don't go to class and the injunction allowing a G-League player to immediately return to play for Alabama, it really blurs what the student part of the game is anymore. I want the players compensated fairly for their skills, but I don't want that to mean that they don't have to be active students.
