Scott Mayle scored on TD passes of 44  and  89 yards to lead Ohio to a 28-16 win over Kentucky in front of a crowd of 61,514 Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium. For the game, Mayle finished with 157 yards receiving  and  52 yards rushing. A Bobcat defense that was missing six starters held the Wildcats in check  and  forced five turnovers.

After a missed field goal on its first possession, Kentucky (1-3 Overall, 0-1 SEC) was back in business as it recovered a Kalvin McRae fumble on the Ohio (3-2, 1-1 MAC) 14. Alexis Bewenge pushed over from  one yard out to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead. Ohio immediately answered driving 80 yards for a score when, on 4th-and-1, Ryan Hawk ran an option keeper 9 yards to paydirt. On the next Bobcat possession, Hawk  and  Mayle got together for a 44-yard TD hookup  and  a 14-7 lead. UK would get a 29-yard Taylor Begley field goal to cut the halftime deficit to 14-10.

Neither team was able to score in the third quarter  and  the Ohio defense would come up big early in the 4th. On 3rd-and-9 from  the Ohio 10, Matt Muncy intercepted UK QB Shane Boyd on the one-yard line to thwart a potential score. A few plays later Austen Everson, in relief of Ryan Hawk, found Mayle on a slant pattern for 89 yards  and  a 21-10 lead.

The Bobcats' D set up Ohio's final score after stopping UK on downs on its own 35. It took Ohio just three plays to capitalize as Kalvin McRae's 12-yard scamper made it 28-10 with 7:17 left. UK added a late score on Andre Woodson's 2-yard TD pass to Lonnell Dewalt. The two-point conversion failed  and  the final was 28-16.

Mayle's 157 receiving yards were the most by an Ohio receiver since Chris Jenkins had 175 in 1993. Hawk was 7-for-15 passing with 114 yards  and  one TD. Everson completed all three of his pass attempts for 104 yards  and  one score. The Bobcats go back into MAC play Saturday at Peden Stadium where  they'll play host to Marshall.
