ATHENS – Ohio used a late 24-2 run to pull away for a 78-61 victory against Oakland on Saturday at The Convo.
The Bobcats trailed 53-50 after Raphael Carter’s dunk with 12:11 remaining, but they dominated the rest of the game.
D.J. Cooper had a double-double with 10 points and 13 assists to lead the way. Walter Offutt had a team-high 14 points and was one of eight Ohio players to score six or more points.
By contrast, Travis Bader carried the load for the Grizzlies with 29 points, going 7 of 12 from 3-point range. Carter added 10 points.
Travis Wilkins made back-to-back 3-pointers for the Bobcats, giving them a 56-53 lead, and after Corey Petros hit two free throws with 10:08 remaining, Oakland did not score again for more than seven minutes. By then Ohio had scored 18 straight points.
The first six points during the run were of the fast-break variety, with T.J. Hall throwing down a dunk after a steal, Stevie Taylor scoring a layup after a Reggie Keely steal and Keely scoring quickly after a missed Bader jumper. A Hall 3-pointer, assisted by Cooper, made it a 10-point game.
Keely hit a jumper, Ivo Baltic scored back-to-back baskets and Ricardo Johnson completed the run with a three-point play that put Ohio on top, 74-55, with 3:10 remaining.
The Bobcats had a 10-point halftime lead, but it disappeared behind Bader’s shooting. He made four 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the second half, with the last one drawing the Grizzlies within a point, 48-47. After a Baltic jumper, Oakland got three straight Carter dunks to go up by three.
It was a 7-0 run that got Ohio separation late in the first half. Nick Kellogg had a layup, Offutt drained a 3-pointer and Hall hit a pair of free throws with less than a second remaining to put the Bobcats up, 39-29.
Bader scored Oakland’s first 10 points, getting his team out to a 10-4 advantage. Cooper and Kellogg hit consecutive 3-pointers to tie it and Cooper scored a layup to put Ohio on top.
Oakland committed 20 turnovers, leading to 28 Ohio points. The Bobcats had a 12-0 advantage in fast-break points and a 40-20 edge in points in the paint.
Kellogg scored 12 points, while Keely finished with 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Bobcats shot 50.8 percent from the field. The Grizzlies connected on 42.3 percent of their tries.
