MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis forced Ohio into 17 turnovers, turning them into 23 points, while also getting 22 fast-break points, running away for an 84-58 victory at the FedEx Forum on Wednesday night.

The Tigers (5-2) also had 11 offensive rebounds, resulting in 17 second-chance points, and they scored 48 points in the paint. Geron Johnson led the way with 21 points, while Shaq Goodwin had 20 points and nine rebounds. The pair came into the game averaging a combined 12.2 points per game.

D.J. Cooper paced the Bobcats (6-2) with 19 points and four assists. Jon Smith had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Things started to fall apart for Ohio late in the first half. The Bobcats led 20-16 on Reggie Keely’s free throws with 7:21 to go, but the Tigers took over with a 13-0 run.

Johnson scored a layup and then added another off a steal to tie the game at 20. He added a free throw and Goodwin followed up his miss on the second attempt with a layup to put Memphis up 23-20. Antonio Barton scored back-to-back baskets off of turnovers and Goodwin added a pair of free throws that made it a nine-point game.

An Ivo Baltic jumper finally snapped Memphis’ run and Ohio, after getting as close as four, went to the locker room down 36-28.

Smith opened the second half with a bucket to get the Bobcats within six, but Goodwin dominated the next few minutes, scoring a layup, a tip-in and a fast-break dunk to put Memphis on top, 42-30.

Cooper twice cut the deficit to single digits with 3-pointers and Nick Kellogg got an open look that could have made it a six-point game, but he was off the mark, and instead, Johnson connected from deep and then got ahead of the defense for a dunk that made it 51-37. From there, the rout was on.

The Bobcats entered as one of the best teams in the nation at forcing turnovers, but caused only nine, scoring just four points off of them. They had only two fast-break and four second-chance points.

Forced to play offense in the half-court, Ohio shot 37.5 percent, including 24 percent from beyond the arc. Memphis thrived with its high-percentage shots, making more than half their attempts from the field.

Early on, things were going well for the Bobcats, with consecutive 3-pointers by T.J. Hall and Walter Offutt putting them up 8-2. Cooper’s second trey of the first half gave Ohio an 18-14 lead at the 8:54 mark.

Joe Jackson had a complete game for Memphis, finishing with 10 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds. Antonio Barton also reached double figures with 11 points.

Led by Johnson and Barton, Memphis got 38 bench points to nine for Ohio.

Ohio returns home, where it won its first six games before dropping two straight on the road, to face Oakland at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Convo.
