ATHENS – Ohio shot 57.4 percent and rolled to a 93-57 victory against winless Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday afternoon at The Convo.
Walter Offutt scored 15 points to lead six Ohio players in double figures. D.J. Cooper was just shy of being the seventh, finishing with nine points, while passing out 14 assists, including nine in the first half when the Bobcats (8-4) built a 51-32 lead. He played only 23 minutes.
“We’ve shared the ball all year,” Ohio coach Jim Christian said. “It was just we had to have all our key players play well at the same time and have some guys step up. Travis (Wilkins) stepped up. Nick (Kellogg) was hurt. He hurt his shooting hand in practice and Travis stepped up. That’s what good teams do.”
Wilkins had 14 points as the Bobcats’ bench outscored the Hawks’ bench, 54-11. Kellogg was scoreless, missing all six shots.
UMES (0-11) shot 52.5 percent, but it had 24 turnovers to only nine for Ohio, resulting in the Bobcats taking 21 more field goal tries.
The Hawks kept it competitive for four minutes, taking a 10-9 lead on a 3-pointer by Louis Bell, who led all scorers with 20 points. The Bobcats, though, responded with 12 straight points and the lead was never less than nine after that.
Cooper scored a free throw and then assisted on three straight baskets – a Reggie Keely layup, a Wilkins 3-pointer and an Ivo Baltic layup. Wilkins had a steal and layup and Jon Smith scored a layup to make it 21-10.
Ohio’s lead was 35-23 with less than five minutes remaining in the first half when Wilkins drained a shot from beyond the arc, Baltic hit a jumper, and after a UMES shot, Offutt scored a shot from deep. Cooper made three free throws with .1 second left to put the Bobcats up 51-32 at the break.
“Definitely, I feel good about how we played,” Wilkins said. “Each individual was willing to share the ball and give the extra pass. We didn’t play selfishly. We came together and played as a team.”
UMES scored only once in the first five minutes of the second half, and Ohio pushed its lead to 61-34. Later, Ohio had an 11-2 run on a Wilkins 3-pointer, two straight Smith scores and a Cooper jumper to build a 39-point advantage.
Baltic, who had struggled in two straight Ohio losses, went 6 of 6 from the field for 12 points and added six rebounds. Reggie Keely scored 12 points and Kadeem Green and Smith had 10 points apiece.
Christian went to a lineup change, sitting starting forwards Baltic and Smith in favor of Keely and Ricardo Johnson. He said he was not sure what the lineup will look like the next time out.
“We got practice the 26th, we’ve got practice the 27th, we’ve got practice the 28th; that will determine it,” Christian said. “… We’re trying to come up with the right combinations for us. If that’s the right combination, we’ll stick with it. … The only ones who care about starting are these guys. I was a player, too. I wanted to start.”
The Bobcats outscored the Hawks 40-20 in the paint, 30-9 off turnovers, 17-7 on second chances and 10-4 on the fast break.
Coming into the game, Ohio had lost four of its last five, but Christian said the team has moved on.
“Media and fans go backwards,” Christian said. “Coaches and players go forward. You can’t replay games. You believe in each other and you go forward. That’s a byproduct of sports. It’s a marathon run. … There are moments you learn from. We didn’t look back one time.”
Wilkins hobbled off the court late in the second half, but he said he suffered just a minor sprained ankle and would be fine.
Ohio travels to Oklahoma to face the Sooners at 8 p.m. Saturday in Norman.
