MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Karvel Anderson made all eight of his 3-point attempts and scored 28 points to lead Robert Morris past Ohio for the fourth straight year, 84-76, on Saturday night at the Sewall Center.
Making his first start of the year, Anderson did not miss on 10 shots overall. The junior college transfer came in having made only 10 of 37 3-point attempts in his first seven games.
Russell Johnson made 11 of 12 free throws and scored 14 points while Velton Jones added 12 points and seven assists for the Colonials (4-4).
D.J. Cooper had 19 points and 10 assists to lead Ohio (6-1) in its first road game of the year. Walter Offutt added 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Bobcats fell into a huge hole, trailing 31-12 with 7:09 left in the first half but got back in it by halftime and chipped away even more in the second half, closing to within three on a Cooper trey with 3:08 remaining and then again at 74-71 on Cooper layup with 2:17 to go.
Coron Williams, though, hit a dagger 3-pointer to put Robert Morris back up by six, and after two Cooper free throws, Anderson hit the final of his shots from beyond the arc to push the lead back to seven with only 1:08 remaining.
With Robert Morris leading 12-10, Anderson made four straight 3-pointers and Williams added a jumper for a 14-0 run that put the Colonials ahead by 16. Cooper finally ended the run with a layup, but Jones connected from deep and added two free throws to push the lead to 19.
Ohio came back with eight points in a row – five by Offutt and then a 3-pointer by Stevie Taylor, who had a season-high 11 points.
Down 12 with 2:09 left in the half, the Bobcats made another push, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Ivo Baltic and Taylor to go into the locker room trailing by only six.
Every time the Bobcats made a run in the second half, the Colonials had an answer – usually in the form of a 3-pointer.
Cooper got Ohio within five with a jumper at the 10:39 mark, but Anderson came back with a trey. Offutt closed the Bobcats’ deficit to 62-57 with a layup with 8:35 remaining, only to watch Jones and Johnson both hit a pair of free throws the next two possessions.
After a Keely layup made it 67-63 with 4:54 remaining, Johnson struck with a shot from deep.
The Bobcats beat the Colonials in basically every statistic but shooting. Robert Morris was good on 56.4 percent of its attempts, compared to only 40.3 percent for Ohio. The Colonials were 12 of 18 on 3-point tries and went 28 of 35 (80 percent) at the foul line, where the Bobcats were 13 of 19 (68.4 percent).
Ohio gave up just three offensive rebounds and had 12. It forced 15 turnovers while committing only eight of its own. The Bobcats held a 22-12 advantage in points in the paint, a 16-1 edge in second-chance points and bettered the Colonials, 14-13, in points off turnovers.
Ricardo Johnson sat out for Ohio with an injury.
The Bobcats play their second road game of the year at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Memphis. The game will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
