ROCK HILL, S.C. – DeVaughn Washington and Tommy Freeman combined for 46 points and Ohio pulled off its sixth victory in eight games and first of the season in four overtime tries, 77-74, in a Bracket Buster game at Winthrop on Saturday night.
Ohio (14-13) led by as many as 20 points in the first half and Winthrop never led. The only regulation tie the Eagles forced was at the end of the second half when Reggie Middleton’s layup with 58 seconds left ultimately forced overtime.
Middleton led all scorers with 19 points, and Charles Corbin scored 16 points for the Eagles (12-15).
Washington went 8 of 14 from the field and 9 of 14 at the line to finish with 25 points, while also adding eight rebounds. Freeman knocked down 7 of 11 3-point attempts in scoring 21 points. He tied Dave Jamerson as the all-time Ohio leader with 239 career treys.
After a slow start, Winthrop cut its deficit to 30-25 by halftime, but Ohio seemed poised to come away with a win, going ahead 64-55 with 3:45 remaining on an Ivo Baltic dunk.
Robbie Dreher hit a pair 3-pointers with a Corbin free throw in between, though, to quickly cut the Eagles’ deficit to two points with 2:02 left. After getting a stop, Middleton tied the game and one more stop, but did not get a shot off after calling a timeout with 19 seconds to go.
The Bobcats led most of the overtime, but Corbin’s layup with 10 seconds left made it a one-point game. D.J. Cooper hit two at the foul line, and Andre Jones missed a potential game-tying layup.
Early on, a Washington dunk gave Ohio a 19-4 lead, and Reggie Keely converted a layup at the 10:10 mark for a 26-6 advantage.
Winthrop turned things around in the latter part of the first half. Down 30-12 with less than seven minutes remaining, the Eagles scored the final 13 points of the half.
Ohio had another quick start to the second half, going up by as much as 13, but Winthrop had a 9-0 run to get within four again. The Eagles got as close as 57-55 with 5:53 remaining before the Bobcats scored seven straight points.
The Eagles shot 47.4 percent to 43.3 percent for the Bobcats. Ohio forced more turnovers, 15-9, but was beat on the boards, 42-34.
Cooper was just 2 of 10 for eight points, but he dished out eight assists and had five rebounds. Baltic had eight points and seven boards.
Besides Freeman, Ohio went 2 of 13 on shots behind the arc.
Gideon Gamble and Dreher scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Eagles. George Valentine had a game-high nine rebounds to go with his eight points, but he fouled out with 2:50 remaining in overtime.
With Ohio’s victory, the Mid-American Conference finished 5-7 in Bracket Buster games.
The Bobcats return to action with a 7 p.m. home game Wednesday against Bowling Green. It will be broadcast on Sports Time Ohio.
