ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio shot only 33.3 percent and committed 21 turnovers in dropping a 65-57 decision against non-conference rival Marshall on Saturday at The Convo.
DeAndre King scored 18 points, while Tirrell Baines finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Thundering Herd (5-2) overcame a 7-0 deficit to start the game.
D.J. Cooper had 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists to lead Ohio (4-3), and Ivo Baltic and DeVaughn Washington each scored 10 points.
“I feel like we had some good shots outside and inside, but some of them just didn’t drop,” said Cooper, who was 8 of 21, including 4 of 11 beyond the arc. “Marshall is a good team, but I feel like we could have executed a lot better.”
Recovering quickly from its slow start, Marshall (5-2) went on a 10-1 run of its own to take the lead in the first half.
After the Bobcats took a one-point lead on a Reggie Keely free throw with 1:33 to go before halftime, Kane connected on a 3-pointer and Baines added a jumper for a four-point Marshall halftime lead.
The Thundering Herd continued their streak by scoring the first five points of the second half to cap off a 9-0 run and they built their biggest lead at 35-25 on a Kane steal that led to a Baines dunk with 15:50 remaining.
Ohio chipped away, tying the game at 43 on Baltic’s three-point play with 9:53 to go and then tying the game again at 55 on a Cooper 3-pointer with 3:35 remaining after Mashall had extended its lead back to as many as six.
But Ohio only scored a pair of free throws the rest of the game, missing its last eight field goal attempts – six of them 3-points attempts.
“We’re obviously disappointed,” Ohio coach John Groce said. “We didn’t play particularly well. I thought we got off to a great start and we’d had a terrific week of practice. My gut told me going in that we were going to play really well and we just didn’t. We’ve got a lot of work to do right now. We’re not nearly good enough yet.”
Marshall made 10 of 12 free throws in the final 3:14 to seal the victory without ever taking a field goal try.
In the game, the Herd was 19 of 26 from the foul line, while the Bobcats were just 10 of 14.
The Herd overcame 21 turnovers, including 12 in the first half – Ohio had 13 before the break – by shooting 54.5 percent in the second half.
“No one in my locker room wants to be mediocre,” Groce said. “None of the players do; I certainly don’t. I can assure that we’re going to work and we’re going to fight to get better at those things that make the difference between being on the good side of the scoreboard and being on the bad.”
Oho hits the road for an 8:05 p.m. game at Illinois State on Wednesday.
