LAS VEGAS – Behind 29 points from D.J. Cooper, Ohio rallied from a late second-half deficit to top Santa Clara, 78-72, at Orleans Arena in the Las Vegas Invitational.
Freshmen T.J. Hall and Nick Kellogg added 15 and 14 points, respectively, and Hall had six steals as the Bobcats (4-2) overcame a 70-66 deficit in the final three minutes by outscoring the Broncos (4-3) by a 12-2 margin.
Marc Trasolini had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead Santa Clara.
Kellogg was key down the stretch, hitting a pair of free throws with 2:39 remaining and then connecting on the go-ahead 3-pointer with a minute left after DeVaughn Washington made a free throw to draw the Bobcats to within one.
Cooper connected on a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left on the clock, and after Evan Roquemore scored a pair of free throws, Cooper hit two more at the foul line for a four-point lead.
Hall closed out the game with a steal and a dunk for Ohio, which made 26 of 30 from the foul line.
Despite missing top shooter Tommy Freeman, who left early in Friday’s game against Kansas, Ohio made 8 of 21 from behind the arc one night after going 0 for 18.
Santa Clara held its largest leads at 19-10 on a Trasolini 3-pointer with 10:26 remaining in the first half and at 30-21 on a pair of Raymond Cowels III free throws with 4:48 to go before the break.
Again, it was Kellogg who made plays when the Bobcats really needed them, hitting a pair of free throws, a layup, two more free throws and then a 3-pointer at the buzzer to help trim the deficit to 34-32 at halftime.
Cooper opened the second half with a trey to give the Bobcats the lead, but the Broncos scored eight in a row, including a pair of Trasolini 3-pointers to go ahead by seven.
Ohio came right back with eight straight points, with Hall and Cooper making 3-pointers for a 43-42 advantage.
Neither team led by more than four again until the final minute.
Ivo Baltic had a game-high nine rebounds to go with eight points for the Bobcats. Washington had eight points and five boards.
Kevin Foster and Cowels each scored 10 points for the Broncos. Foster had five assists.
The Bobcats get a week off before hosting Marshall at 2 p.m. Saturday.
