ATHENS, Ohio – DeVaughn Washington and Nick Kellogg came off the bench to score 16 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the Ohio men’s basketball team to an 83-70 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday at The Convo.

The Islanders’ Desmond Watt led all players with 26 points and 12 rebounds, but the Bobcats were in control throughout most of the game, building a 44-26 halftime edge.

Ivo Baltic had a career-high nine rebounds to go with 12 points, while Reggie Keely also scored 12 points and added five boards. D.J. Cooper, who led the Bobcats in scoring the first two games this season, had only six points, but tied a career-high by dishing out 12 assists.

Corpus Christi (1-3) scored the first five points of the game, but Ohio (2-1) scored the next 13, including eight by Washington, to take the lead for good.

After the Bobcats led by as many as nine, the Islanders used an 8-0 run to draw to within a point, 18-17, but Kellogg had five points during a 7-0 Ohio run.

Ohio led 31-23 with less than four minutes left in the half and finished with a flurry, outscoring Corpus Christi 13-3 to build an 18-point halftime edge.

"Over that 16 minutes in the first half, the bench gave us tremendous energy and a lot of momentum that helped us make some plays both offensively and defensively," Ohio coach John Groce said. "Ultimately, that was kind of the difference."

A Tommy Freeman 3-pointer and a Keely layup to start the second half gave the Bobcats their biggest lead of 23, and although the Islanders made some runs, including scoring nine straight points, Ohio maintained a double-digit lead through the entire second half.

The Bobcats had a 39-15 advantage in points in the paint, and after a poor-shooting night in a loss to Oakland in their last game, they shot 49.2 percent from the floor and 84.2 percent at the foul line against the Islanders.

Terrence Jones, with 11 points, and Justin Reynolds, with 10 points, scored in double-figures for Corpus Christi.

Ohio is back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday in The Convo against Valparaiso.
