Congratulations to OHIO Volleyball for another successful season. As noted by many here, this past weekend was total team domination- both the offense and defense were ‘spot on’ in both matches.
A successful top 30 season took a nose-dive about a month ago after the following:
Miami sweeps Ohio in Oxford
Northern sweeps Ohio in DeKalb
Kent easily takes out of the Cats in 4 sets in Athens
These 3 teams turned out to be the teams that made it to Athens for the final 4 show down.
It was back then that the coaches reassessed some things, and made changes in player assignments and play style. The offense particularly changed- Mal Salis moved to OH while Shelby Walker returned to her former position as MB. They sped up the offensive flow along with other adjustments.
They had 2 weeks to put this into place before the tourney. Ohio won their next 4 games easily. Perhaps it gave them the opportunity against some weaker opponents to work things out.
Ohio was in total control in the semis and in the final. I never imagined the Cats would win so convincingly over teams that dominated them less than a month ago.
So one shout out goes to Coach Dean Webb and his staff for making the adjustments needed and being able to get player buy-in to execute them.
Another shout out goes to the defense that’s been strong all year. Kent’s defense on Saturday was no match. 102 digs for the weekend. Congrats to Meredith Ashy (all conference tourney team), Erica Walker, Brooke Coleman, and Bree Hord.
And congrats to the re-invented offense, with a team .366 hitting % to .109 for NIU. Mal Salis who was phenomenal: 19 kills (in 3 sets!). And key performances from Jaime Kosiorek (10 kills), Ali Lake (6), Karin Bull (6) and Shelby Walker (6).
And let’s not forget Abby Gilleland, our setter extraordinaire and tourney MVP.
Good luck against Dayton and good luck in the Big Dance!
Go OHIO
