The first thing I noticed when I looked at this roster was the absence of the Raines girl from Alexander.

What happened there I never saw a transfer notice on this board before everything was wiped out.

It is my understanding that she is looking at nursing programs at other institutions but I have not spoken to her directly.

Lauren Raines has enrolled at Rio Grande to play volleyball with fellow Spartan teammate Whitney Smith,   Nicole Ogg also from Alexander  will be a freshman on the Rio Grande volleyball team this season. Caity and Cindy Willis from the Athens Bulldogs volleyball team, i believe they are twins and they also have committed to Rio Grande to play volleyball this season.

I ask this of Aaron and others who follow the program more closely than I.

Is this a comparatively young roster?  will we be relying on freshmen/sophs more than in the past?

Yes and Yes.

One need only review the recruiting classes to see why we seem a little thin in the seniority department:

2007 Freshmen (current seniors):  Michelle, Sue, Meryl.  GONE:  Szkutnick (outside hitter)

2008 Freshmen (current juniors):  Katie, Nicole    GONE:  Hockaday (outside hitter; bailed out after the coaching change).

We have (young) talent; I'm anxious to see who has "break-out" years.   We need the younger players to step up this year, more than ever.

EDIT:  Regarding Raines, remember that she was a walk-on.  I don't think any announcement of that departure was warranted or necessary.   Personally, I don't think Jason should be wasting any time or ink writing about who is NOT going to be a Bobcat..    I wish Lauren nothing but the best at Rio.

I will agree with Radar because he is the smartest person I know even though I only know 2 people.

The 2005 Sweet 16 team had 5 freshmen with Amanda Andersen and Molly Mangan being the 2 freshmen that did receive a lot of playing time.

My 2010 watch list is on Lexie Hartnett, Mandy Nichols, and Faith Robins as far as the front row. In my opinion we need at least 2 of these 3 to have an All-MAC type season in order for Michelle to have at least 4 legitimate attack options. This has been one of the team's strengths through the decade.

Sue and/or Michelle are legitimate POY material.

Radar is very correct in that the loss of Melissa and Rachael is most obvious this season.

With the back row the learning curve needs to be pretty short for who wins the Libero spot. I think the 2 freshmen DS players will see time.

With the front row freshmen who the heck knows. If someone gets hurt we will find out.

Is this a young team compared to others this past decade? Yes.

Can this team win the MAC? Yes. It will be a shame however if they go 13-3, still win and Bobcat Attack "experts" call it a failure.

The comments above seem spot-on to me.

We have a solid nucleas  with  3 seniors in Michelle, Sue and Meryl, and 3 juniors in Nicole, Mandy and Katie. Sue & Michelle are ‘lights-out’ players and serious contenders for the MAC POY award.

I think for this team to make a statement this year, i.e., win the MAC and possibly see a top 25 ranking will depend of several factors:

No significant injuries

Faith continues the strong progress she showed over her 1st year season

Mandy is fully recovered and shows her potential

Other keys lay with Lexie (actually 6’3”+) and Katie. How quickly can Lexie step up to Division l vball? Can Katie develop into a consistent blocking and serving beast?

And can backup players contribute? Leah is a solid setter if needed. At least one of the frosh defensive specialists, Molly and Kelly needs to help out. And it would be nice if Marah shows she’s ready to contribute at MB and maybe Lauren and Ashley can help out too.
