ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Volleyball has announced the team will hold an open tryout on Sunday, September 11 at 4:30 p.m.. The event will be held at the Convocation Center and prospective players are expected to arrive prepared for the tryout with a record of physical within the past six months.

The Bobcats have reached the NCAA Tournament the past eight seasons and are the reigning Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament Champions. Ohio eclipsed the 20-win mark, captured a division title and also reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row. The Bobcats have surpassed 10 wins in MAC play for nine-straight years and led the nation in blocking during the 2010 season.

Not sure what this means.

DISCLAIMER:  This is pure conjecture, because I have no inside information, but...

Quite possible that Ryan would like to be able to redshirt one or more players, and would like some extra players as an insurance policy against injury.  Would hate to go late into the season, have an injury, and be forced into burning up a red-shirt for less than half a season...recall that two years ago we had two walk-ons; one left after a season, the other after two seasons.

We've had walk-ons contribute before, so why not?

Just a thing.

Nobilio left to go home right after the Green & White Match (homesick), they have planned to have a try out – they just can’t do it till students get here.  Ryan likes 4 DS’s on the roster and he knows of 2 or 3 students currently attending OHIO that wanted to walk-on – but he isn’t suppose to have a big roster. They have reached out to these 2 or 3 kids and are expecting them to try-out.  Rather than invite only – they probably figured they should just invite everyone.

I believe the redshirt options are now closed, as all four freshmen have played in several games.

From an NCAA webpage I read that "NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition."

Serena played several rotations against Kentucky and Western Kentucky (she went two-for-three, or .667 against Western), and Chelsea, Kelly L and Bailey have all played extensively.

If you are talking about nonmedical redshirts, then you are correct.  (Quite frankly I hadn't paid attention to who has/hasn't played so far).

However, redshirt is still an option if (God forbid) someone was injured in the first half of the season and missed the rest.

All that being said, there is certainly nothing to lose by holding a tryout and seeing what talent is walking around campus...

There are probably a few people who can contribute to the team hanging around campus. From what I can remember, women's club volleyball tryouts at Ping were always packed with girls who seemed to know what they were doing. Always pissed me off when I was trying to run some pickup basketball.

And sometimes, having a few more women who can play can be extremely helpful at practice, too.

The release seems a bit desperate (especially considering the timing), but I wouldn't read too much into it.

Nevertheless, I'm a little worried about this season. Granted, I felt the same way at the beginning of last season, but it feels like we're declining ever so slightly. I'll be interested to see how we look in our home tournament this weekend.

I was probably the most pessimistic person last season. I'm optimistic this season and more so for next year.

Doesn't or shouldn't every team that is supported by the University have an open tryout at some point?  It seems like all students should have that opportunity regardless of the very long odds against them.
