Looking forward to this match -- we had a whale of a match with UT last season -- and it should be a very good early test for the team!

Tennessee could be their toughest opponent all season. It will be a big challenge with the loss of three key players, but we have a strong nucleus along with important new players who will need to step up.

Tomorrows' opponents, 'Nova and Maryland had good seasons last year so they will certainly be a challenge too.

Go OHIO

And they drop the second set 25-13.  Looked like they just fell apart....it happens.

On to the 5th.

I don't like this, because over the past few years the Cats don't have a great track record when it goes to 5.

Up and down all night...Cats drop 4th 25-17....on to the fifth!

This is what you get when you have an extremely tough pre-conf schedule.  We owe them for the 5 set heart breaker from last year though!

Son of a &*#$*$&%!  That horrible call by the ref early in the 5th completely took us out of our game.

Or not.  Ryan should chew that refs ass all the way to the back.

What should have been a 4-3 Ohio lead at that point results in a 5 point run for the Vols that Ohio can not come back from.

This is an encouraging result. We're verrrry young, and if we can give a good team a tough time on the road out of the gate, I'm encouraged.

Excuse my ignorance, but is it generally agreed that we lost a fair amount to graduation...or would all instead say that our returners give us a totally solid base?

I'd say we did lose quite a bit, and agree with JSF that this is a pretty encouraging result, though I wish we'd been able to pull it off.  Tennessee is a good team, and we hung with them quite well in our first match of the season.  I don't see any reason this team shouldn't be competitive in the NCAA tournament when the time comes.

2 sets each now between us and Maryland.  We took the first two, 25-22 and 25-23, then dropped sets 3 and 4, 16-25 and 21-25.  On to another fifth set!

Coming into camp, we only had two people (Katie, Lexie) you could pencil into their positions.

We beat Maryland in the fifth.

Thanks for the answers, folks.  Is it fair to say that we're re-loading, that the future--even this year--is pretty bright, then?  (I'm guessing so given Saturday's two five-set wins.)

I think that's a safe statement, Monroe -- we lost a big senior class, including two all-MAC (Jacobi first team, Jantsch second team)...BUT, we returned a first team (Post) and an All-Freshmen team (Hartnett), AND added a recruiting class that the coaching staff has been stoked about for two years.

I for one can't wait to see this team in person on Sept. 9 (of course, I can't remember when I wasn't excited for OHIO VOLLEYBALL!)

Going 2-1 in three five-set matches is a character builder for a young team...and a great way to start the season.

Left the house to go camping Saturday morning just to come back and see the Bobcats win two 5-game matches. Maybe I should just turn off the Gametracker/video feed if a game is going to the final set.

Still disappointed about the game against Tennessee, but 2 out of 3 isn't bad for a team so young.

Sorry for my ignorance on the subject because I really don't follow volleyball as closely as the other sports, but how big of a deal is it to beat these BCS conference teams like Maryland and Villanova, and almost beat Tennessee?  I know in football or basketball it would be a huge deal, but does this give us some type of national ranking now or at least jump us up in the eyes of the volleyball world?

It's even more regimented in volleyball. The Pac-10 is on top with the Big 12 and Big 10 behind, then the SEC, then the Big East way behind.
