I live over an hour away, so I only make about half the games. Was excited to head over tonight and see the girls in action. I've got to say, I'm a little concerned about the team this year. Hard to put my finger on it, but it seems we lack the "fire" of teams past. We no longer step onto the court and EXPECT to dominate. We are now seeing Theis with entirely his own recruits...and I've got to say, I'm not sure if I like what I see. Am I overreacting here?

Yes, you are overreacting.

This was my first chance to see this team in person this year, and I assume yours as well.

Did you happen to notice that we started three freshmen tonight?  We are very talented, but young.  Remember this is the same team that won three of its first four this season, going five sets in  all four.  We had more seniors last year, but also more trouble closing out the five-set matches.

No team in the MAC plays as daunting a pre-conference schedule as Ohio.  This will pay dividends when we reach MAC play.

All that being said, we didn't have the "A" game tonight, and that can be largely attributed to a more veteran Louisville team that kept us off balance all night.  We simply could not get in system enough; our passing wasn't great and we gave them too many free balls.

This team will win a lot before its all said and done.

And it wasn't so long ago we beat Louisville. They're going to get up for us.

My concern is that there is no true leader on the floor.  Post is just not a senior leader.   Not enough confidence in each other's play.  Need more attacker emotion.  This is a team that needs development and future games will do that.  But we are going to take our lumps.  I am very encouraged by our frosh. A very good recruiting class. We will be OK.

I don't think this is true. She's not a demonstrative in-your-face type, but she draws respect from her teammates.

But hey, an easy win today over Marshall!

I had the chance to watch probably my only match of the year against Marshall( a 1-5 team).  I thought we looked pretty sketchy until the 8-4 mark(Marshall ahead)  in the second set when they were killing us, something happened-I don't know what-and we killed them the reast of the way.  It looked like a different team after that point.  I hardly ever see them play, but I follow them on Tv when possible and on game-tracker and - competition level or not-we are are not the dominant team I remember in the past.  I have been saying for years that the MAC is catching up with us.  I think I can remember some no loss league records.  Maybe the league is getting better, but I have to think that we are just not as good.  Not saying we're bad by any means, but we're just not as good.   Starting 2 or 3 freshmen doesn't make me feel real good about the current season, but should pay off in future years for sure.

I believe there is reasonable doubt this team will make it to the NCAA tournament this year.  Even without our top attacking player, we should not be swept by Georgia Southern in any tournament.  I share the concern of the OP.

That is one thing we can look forward to. Considering the age of the our weapons on the offensive end, I feel pretty good about the next few years.

My God.

It is WAY too early to be pressing the panic button.  You do realize that the MAC season hasn't started yet, right?

I'm going to cut you a little slack and assume you are a casual fan...

First, this team is young, but EXTREMELY talented...it has a different make-up and personality than last year's team, and it is taking time to find the right combination(s) and allow the team to jell.

To dismiss the impact of having a starter sit out is a little naive.  Katie is a middle; so with Kelly out she moves outside, and Marah plays middle (Marah did not play much at all last season).  Chemistry got messed up; and the rest of the team now has to get used to someone in a different position and someone who hasn't been on the court much.

BTW, we were just down 24-23 to Georgia State and won 27-25 to take the match 3-1.

This team is going to be good THIS year...do you think it was a fluke that they were picked to win the East AGAIN?

Most of the time, these pre-season polls are just a rerun of where everybody finished the year before.  Not terribly meaningfull IMO.

Really

ReALLY?

Looks like a chink of sky just fell and landed on the big fat hen....

Seriously. These are highlevel frosh. I saw this team tonite and have no problem with their level of acheivement and progress. Darcy Dorton left Muncie to start her freshman year at Penn State and won a national championship. THese kids can play. No worries. YOu can say the same thing about Jocoby or Blackburn or many of the players of the past. Did they have the grunt of a Hermann or the euberance of Bender. Nahhhhh But Katie is a leader and these bids are like SIlent, tenacious assassins. Faith knocks down kills, Lexie bounces on a pogo stick and challenges constantly the back line digs and extends to get balls Meryl may not have been physically ablr to get. Face it, Michelle left some pretty big shoes to fill but I see these setters have a lot more active defenders who dig out or at least gets hands on impossible balls while there is a multitude of hitters with many different looks.

KIller ....no maybe not but doggedly tenacious. Anyone who was there to nite saw the loooooong volleys that the team kept alove refusing to let balls hit the ground. WHen Ball State comes to town and SHondells all defense all in  all  the time will not let a balll drop faces this bunch I want to be inthe house because that is gonna be a match. Hell yeah.

Easy to prognostiate no NCAA appearance and given the outside chance that all hell breaks loose you will look like a genius but I dont see it happening unless BAll State and Western just dominate a lot more than I think they are capable of......Who else has a shot? NIU? I would be downright shocked if these girls dont win 14 MAC matches. They are very good and improving.....
