My understanding is that it is for financial reasons.  Apparently, Spires wanted the event so badly that the MAC is not being charged rent.  I personally think SeaGate was a better venue, but money talks.  I am eager to see how this venue works for college volleyball, so I'll keep an open mind.  I'm looking forward to being there next weekend.

The facility itself is supposed to be fantastic, but there's nothing around it.

I have no doubt it's probably an excellent facility for what it is, i.e., a sportsplex.  How it will work as a venue for college volleyball, I'm not sure --- but we'll find out.

Here's the important question, though: is the alumni band traveling?

Switzerland seems a long way to travel for MAC  Volleyball.

Tweeted Jeremy Guy, he says championship match only, both on STO and streaming from the sound of it.  Guess we gotta watch live stats tonight

Did anyone call the STO or MAC Sports if they would broadcast online?

The live stats are the worse ever! Viewing Cent Mich and Western. They didn't clear Ball State game so scores are together, lists all players from four teams in current stats. Just horrible.

Not a good way to start the new location with this broadcast experience. There are more fans on line than on site. This is 2011!

Central won Western 3-0
Ball State won Eastern 3-1

REPORT FROM THE TOURNAMENT:

Some comments on the site:

Plus:
  • The sportsplex is amazing.  Huge.  Why Geneva is anybody's guess, but it is impressive, as a sportsplex.
  • MAC and Spire Institute staff have busted it to make it a good environment
  • Temporary bleachers are not as high as permanent, which disperses the crowd.  Bleachers put the fans closer to the floor/actiion
Minus:
  • Haven't talked with the coaches or players about it, and call me old fashioned, but I just prefer a floating, wood floor to a sport court.  That's (sport courts) probably all the players ever saw when playing on their club teams, so they probably don't mind...
  • As nice a facility as it is, it just doesn't have the "collegiate" atmosphere I'm accustomed to.
  • I understand the MAC Gametracker has been less than optimal, to say the least.   You may want to consider following Ohio Volleyball on Twitter -- very frequent match updates are given there.
Other notes:
  • Northern dismantled BG.  Wycinski (MAC POY) is the real deal for Northern.  She is doing for them what Ellen did for us....
  • We came out about as loose as I've seen us in a few months.  Went into a little funk in the third set, but came out of it (fortunately).  I know we can still be better, and we'll need to.
    • OHIO fans: is it any wonder our players are such fine representatives of OHIO? Parents/families here are great people...and very supportive.
    • Thanks to the OHIO fans who gave us (Alumni Varsity Band) a warm welcome.  Also made some friends among opposing (esp. Miami) fans...
    • Only one coach in the MAC has ever requested that the AVB  NOT play....any guess who that is?  Amazing...
On to the Chippewas at 5:00...

LET'S GO CATS!!

Thanks for the info Radar. Can you or anyone else speak to crowd attendance as it was not listed in the box score.  How did it compare with Toledo crowds. Which teams were best represented?

I know that it's not the point (which is to win the title) and it's late.  But considering the suckage of last night's opponent and the results:

IS THAT NOT A SCOREBOARD?

3-0. The streak of titles is over and most likely the streak of tournament bids. Sad day.

Certainly.  Overall I'd say the crowds were similar, to previous years in Toledo.  It seemed like the stands swere more full, but I attribute much of that to the fact that the fans were spread between the two sides of bleachers, whereas at SeaGate the fans were all sitting on oe side.    Total seating capacity in Geneva may be half of the SeaGate.

As far as who had the biggest followings, from what I saw, I'd say Ohio and Miami were up there, Ball State's and Northern's after that, followed by BG and certainly the least represented was Central (I did not see Eastern's and Western's crowds, as they had already been elminated when I got here).  I also understand that some local (junior high?) teams supposedly "adopted" MAC teams, and sent letters/notes to the participating players in advance of the tournament.  Some of those players showed up to root for the players/teams they had been corresponding with, without really having any particular allegiances.   It was a nice idea -- but I did not see evidence that it resulted in any measurable attendance boost.

Not the ending to the season that we have been accustomed to, but if this is what we can consider a "down" year, that says a lot.  I know a lot of teams that would love to consider 20+ wins as a "down" year.   We have some things to get figured out in the off-season...

Chances at return to the NCAA tournament took a major blow -- to where we are probably a long shot.  A lot would be hinging on RPI's and how other tournaments play out.  We'll see.

Today we had nine service errors and were aced 12 times.  21 points we gave them.  Some service errors and a few opponent aces are to be expected, but what happened to us today was really frustrating.  I really think we're better than that, but we sure as heck didn't show it.

Props to Central -- they came out fired up and played with the passion that quite frankly we lacked for most of the season.

From you experts, as one who loves the V but couldn't get in to see any of the sets or find time to watch any on 'net (sorry), can you tell me about our prospects for next season?  What are our strengths, weaknesses, some info on returning players, info on how recruits seem to fit into the returning pieces, comments on who developed this year, and how our players tend to develop from year to year (anyone we can look to bigtime next year who didn't contribute too much this year), etc ?

I think we will be stronger next year. There will be lots of competition at the setter position which will only make everyone stonger. The Freshman outsides and Sophomore DS/ Liberos return with a year of experience.  You have Faith as a Senior Right Side leading with tons of experience and others ready to compete at that spot who will help the team as a whole. And although katie's experience is a loss, I think the Middles will be strong. Lexie brings playing experience and will continue to improve and Serena brings a big block and quickness. Plus the desire of the rest to play will see everyone competing to get on the floor and pushing one and other.
