American Volleyball Coaches Association blogger Deb Stadick's 5 top matches this week includes this one (taken from Volley Talk) :

No. 24 North Carolina @ Ohio
Friday, Sept. 6

Hot off a win over No. 8 Oregon, the Bobcats have a lot of momentum going into week two of competition. Another match against a ranked opponent in North Carolina will test their consistency and ability to maintain that high level of play.

Ohio Bobcats Athletics
Meredith Ashy (L) has been playing phenomenal defense for the Bobcats throughout preseason, keeping Abby Gilleland (left) in system and allowing her to spread out the offense. Karin Bull (MH), Katie Norton (OH) and Kelly Lamberti (OH) all have the potential to post big offensive numbers.

North Carolina’s 6-2 offense and back row prowess has allowed them to swing well from every position. Six players--Jovana Bjelica (OH), Kayla Bellinger(OH/OPP), Paige Neuenfeldt(MH), Leigh Andrew (OH),Victoria McPherson (MH) and Lauren Adkins (OH) have tallied over 20 kills this season, which is a testament to their truly well-rounded offense.

Both programs play a very similar game. They swing for a high percentage (Ohio: .332, NC: .295), spread the offense, put up a decent block and play tough defense. For me, the question in this match is which team can play their game better. Who can stick to the game plan, maintain their level of play and consistently execute on the things they are good at.

While Ohio is on the rise and has some serious momentum, North Carolina is more accustomed to playing at this level.

My Pick: North Carolina in 4.

This is the 7:00 game on Friday. We play UC at noon and another ranked team, Dayton, Saturday at 3:00.

Go OHIO

It went 5 sets last year. N.C. must endure a long bus ride, then play a very good, and perhaps a pissed off Dayton (lost to Missouri State) earlier in the day.  I think it goes 4 sets we win, if it goes 5 sets, it could be close. Should be fun! JMHO

Typical blogger work product ... must have read one box score prior to writing her match "preview".  NC in 4.  Really?  No mention of Chelsea (All-MAC x 2) or Alexis (Pac-12, 5th yr) in the story.  Bobcats in 3.  OU is DEEP this season and contributions will come from many.  Mark it down!

Having a quality lib makes such a HUGE difference and we haven't had one in a few years now. Love it.

Dayton scares me, though. They always bring it against us.

Dayton is very talented.  A loss to Missouri State (as mentioned) will likely motivate them big-time.  They were in the top 20 most of last year and made a nice tournament run.  Though some key players graduated (and their coach moved to Wisconsin), a bunch of strong talent returned.  Cincy first on Friday at Noon ... If Cats take 3 this weekend expect a move into the top 25 and beyond.  Michigan and Western KY (both on the road ... both ranked) await.  MI is loaded again and Western KY just beat Purdue in W. Lafayette.  Another brutally tough pre-conference schedule.

Just want to say that players, players parents, etc read this blog. Comments made like "quality lib makes a huge difference and we have not had one in a few years now" should not even be said. Especially when one of those libero's still plays on the team. If you were libero with the #1 blocking team in the nation, you would also slide under the radar.
And I know I am going to get the "we can express anything we want" but just remember, takes every girl on that roster to make Ohio volleyball what it is...not just the chosen few.

Understand yr feelings, but only positive comments allowed?  Sorry, not in this day and age.  Don't know of a fan board for any sport at any school that operates that way...

Pre-season, pre-game ranking doesn't mean much. It's the real game that counts. Let them feel flattered. We can go as  hungry undercats.

I stand by what I said. DS had been a weakness for this team for a long time. Seems to be a strength now, though.

Can't wait to see the first match tomorrow.  Already arranged the schedule to take "lunch hour" in the Convo.  Watched the whole Oregon match and was very impressed with the back row play.  As JSF has clearly stated, the defense was as good as it has been in quite some time.  It was good to see the defenders first move toward the ball as opposed to down and then toward the ball.
