It's official: http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/02261...

Sounds like a good get. What do we know about his style?

Looking at the Belmont roster, this guy recruits the entire country.  It will be interesting to see how he handles the cultural differences between Belmont and OU.  Agreed with Jeff though, on paper it looks like a very good hire.

Best wishes Coach Webb.

There's a long thread on volley talk if anyone's interested. It begins with a discussion of the coaching search, then morphs into a "was Theis as good a coach as Carlston at OHIO",  and then continues with the Webb hire and a silly "wow" rant.

It also mentions that Liis transferred to Duquesne. Wonder if she is set to graduate and play immediately next year like Alexis Pinson did. Liis still appears on our spring roster.

Also, Geneva Yee is not on the spring roster, but it looks like we picked up a solid transfer from Depaul in Aubree Hord.

Seems like a solid hire, I'm just hoping that we don't lose any more players because of it.
I noticed that his Belmont team last year lost to Miami and NIU from the MAC and had a pretty pedestrian season at 19-14 I think it was.
In Shaus we trust I guess.

Geneva Yee is from Wisconsin.  The coach who recruited her to Ohio just took the head job at a school in Wisconsin.  Would anyone be terribly surprised is she followed him back home?

In addition, Meghan Keck has now officially joined the Marquette staff.

Would like to get bornacatfan's take on this hire, since the new coach was a coach with Munciana some years ago.

Sounds like a very good hire.

Cultural differences? Nashville and country singers at Mem Aud? You're call that a cultural difference? I bet you a selling point on Webb for Schaus was the cultural similarity over some of the other options. Webb if you look at his track record was bumping up against the ceiling of what could be accomplished at Belmont and that is about the case everywhere he's gone. He's got more potential here in Athens than what he's had to work with so far in Division 1.

I'm kind of with Alan on this one, he's just not talking about the geographical setting, he could mean the differences in the backgrounds and sizes and maybe even politics of the two schools. I'm not sure what he meant but I get a lot if differences between the two schools. Not too many years ago this was a Baptist affiliated college, enough said,

I may have to take my comments back because they do advertise themselves as christian university but I thought Alan was talking about something uniquely distinct at OU. He was at ETSU before Belmont so I think he can handle it. It one thing to be affiliated with a church its another to state a christian mission.

Talked to a few folk tied into the local volley scene . They were texting back and forth about the hire. Dave SHondell at Purdue hired him 17 years ago when Munciana was bursting onto the national scene as a power. He could not say enough good things.

Folks who had girls who played for him are happy. FOlks who follow Balls are not....they lamented the hire as it means OHIO still has a stranglehold on the conference in their eyes.

SOunds like a great hire from the local volley gurus.

Off Topic...one of the parents of a Muncie Central volley player sitting there said her daughter had been recruited by Kent and OHIO. Daughter came back from Kent in tears (one of our former state champs and Wisky grad is an asst there ) saying it was so depressing she did not stay the weekend....and then said .....OHIO was too far away from Muncie to seriously consider. Imagine my surprise and role in this conversation. She will be attending IUPUI....interesting.

In watching some of the videos and reading quotes, it seems like Webb is an evangelical Christian. As Alan mentioned, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to the Athens and OU culture. Having gone to our basketball game vs. Belmont last year, I can assure you that it is very different.

The comment about Liis on volleytalk was assuming her transfer to Duquesne had to do with the coaching change. Not true. Liis was honored on senior day last Fall as she ended her career at OHIO and was moving on.

On a side note, her "American" parents who accompanied her on the floor on senior day are the parents of Marrah Farage, a good friend of Liis who had previously transferred from here to Duquesne, looking for more playing time (she had a great season there). So I assume her transfer had to do with Marrah who I believe finished her career there but is continuing in graduate school. Whether Liis plans to use her remaining year of eligibility, I don't know. I wouldn't mind seeing her return here next year in a Dukes uniform or some day on the tube in an Estonian Olympic uniform.

Well, unless he ends up evangelizing to players or tries to turn volleyball into some sort of evangelical christians welcome only situation, I'm not sure this matters at all.

They pay increase must have been there to get him to leave Nashville.  That's gotta be a tough place to move away from.

Just got back from the press conference.  Impressive to say the least.  The one thing that stuck out was something that Schaus said - for this program, we're now at a level where we're hiring head coaches.  As the most successful program here at OU, that's a pretty serious statement as to the level this program has risen to.  Webb has a great command of the English language and is an excellent public speaker.  At 41, with 17 years of head coaching experience, he is definitely in the right place at the right time to take this program to the next level.  Ryan and Geoff and Mike did a great job of building the foundation and putting up the walls.  Webb should be able to put a water proof roof on this Bobcat dynasty.  I'm excited for the future.

Any mention of whether he'll continue to schedule tough? That is what I am most curious about at this moment.

No mention of scheduling, but he was impressive.  I just watched the news conference and he really makes one feel good about the future of the program.  He certainly said all of the right things about the personal development of the players.  It sounds like he will be very aggressive especially in serving and the speed of the game.  Not a volleyball expert, but I was impressed.

Good question.  Questions were limited to the media and they only asked four basic ones.

I've seen mentioned on Twitter that we will have home matches against Virginia Tech, VCU, and Texas A&M as well as a tournament in Hawaii.

Other than Hawaii, I don't think this is the high level of competition that JSF is talking about.

Those are home matches, though. They tend to be of a lower caliber. Isn't VCU pretty decent though?

Correct, sir!  Won 26 games last year, and one of those wins was against Ohio.

I imagine that taking this team to the next level would have to involve the same type of tough non-con. schedule that Ryan put together last few years.
