Sad that the administration is keeping them from truly reaching their potential..
It's not the administration preventing this.

So what's going on? Students not letting other students down there? Is this a new thing?

I have noticed significantly more people in the upper bowl behind the Ozone. Is this because of the policing of the Ozone entrance and those people turning around and heading to the upper bowl?

Don't know if you're already doing this or not, but I hope you allow entrance to the bleachers to any students around tip time. Good that you're giving paying members first dibs.

I just feel like after I was turned away one time I'd probably be pissed and just find a seat somewhere else.

Non-paying members can feel excluded or paying members can feel like they're not getting their money's worth. The latter seems much worse to me.

Alright, here's the deal:

O Zone memberships are $15 for Freshmen, $20 for any other students. The membership gets you a t-shirt and a membership card. The membership card is used during MAC games to give priority seating to paying members. When tip happens, anyone can come and sit down there.

The policy is enforced by student workers, be it practicum or internship students.

So, what I've been noticing is that smaller groups are down by the court during pregame, and a lot of people wait for tip to move. The result is that those who really want to move do, and those who don't, don't. Thus, the students who want to raise hell get the chance to be closer if they have a class on Wednesday nights or a Saturday morning job.

When I first saw the system implemented, it made me unsettled because of the mass numbers of students filling the upper bowl. I later realized that it meant a slightly louder atmosphere down near the court, and it was way easier to get the students down there to participate in cheers because they actually wanted to be there to raise a ruckus. On the broadcast it doesn't look all that great, but it sounds it.

+1 I wasn't a huge fan of the idea at first but honestly last game was one of the more fun games in the ozone I've had in a while. and your analysis of ppl who wanting to come down is spot on. I have a card and came with 5 or 6 ppl who didn't so we just waited till tip, moved down, and had a great seat. Even with the less ppl the ones who were there were a lot more into it than usual.

This is exactly how I have always thought it should be done. Even when I was on the board we couldn't manage to consistently enforce it.

I understand the membership cost for t-shirts.. But do the students even wear their t-shirts? The cards are whatever.. I feel like it makes things confusing, but if someone wants to stand and check cards before the game, whatever.. I just have felt like the student section has been down big time this year.. I tried to give the benefit of the doubt before league play started, but it doesn't seem to have gotten any better.. Used to NEVER be an empty seat in the ozone and it was ROWDY.. Maybe it's just a bad year for rowdy students.

Also got to keep in mind other than a few minutes at the end of last game, there hasn't been an awful lot to be rowdy about thus far. Definitely slow start. Hopefully all that is changing.

How well the team is playing is obviously going to have a huge impact on the student section...

I remember back in 08-09 and 09-10 in Groce's early years when the team wasn't great the #'s in the O Zone weren't great but you had a very high % of people who cared and wanted to cheer so it was a great atmosphere.

After Georgetown the O Zone really started getting PACKED which was both good and bad. Obviously, you want as many people in that student section as possible but it also meant a lot more casual fans who weren't as interested in cheering like crazy.

This is the balance. As much as you'd like it, we're not going to have 2,000 crazy diehards who come every night and go crazy for 2 and half hours. Just isn't happening. Sometimes the casuals get into it and sometimes they don't.

In the bleachers? I swear if I got to the game with less than 5 minutes in warm ups, I didn't have a spot in the bleachers.

The O Zone was less than half full most of the 2003-04 season. It didn't fill up again until later in the 2005 season.

Haha.. Well I guess I don't have a photographic memory like you.. 2005 until 2014 is pretty damn good.. It's disappointing that it's taken a step back this year is what I'm trying to say.

Well, my old computer had some videos I'd watch occasionally. I guess it stuck out in my mind.

But there would be open spots in the corners every so often. One benefit of moving the 110 was it better hid the shrinking O Zone attendance.

Let's get someone that's a well respected leader to get this show on the road !! .. the o-zone used to do some damage .. maybe we need some old alumni o-zoners to come back and show the kids what it's all about !!

the O-zone can create a crazy wacky loud environment when it's cookin' .. the truth is IT AIN'T BEEN COOKIN' !!!!

BANG !! .. oh baby the way things used to be !!

Gotta be ready to go Wednesday night.. If you can't get up for Akron, you don't have a heart.

Due to an unfortunate event called work, I can't make the Akron game... I hope it's packed and loud.
