This was a topic last year that seemed to have support, so now with the new year, let's bring back the O-H-I-O chant to the way it used to be, and the way it made more sense:

After two rounds of each letter followed by claps (or fist to chest for 110), the last O of O-H-I-O should be followed by "HIO," rather than just the OHH groan. It was that way for years, and I don't know how it got changed. If someone on campus could speak to those in charge, including the 110, maybe it could get back to where it was, what sounded better, and what made more sense. Just an old alumni who still has season tickets. Thanks.

Hi. OZone president here. I'm just going to go ahead and say that this is something that probably has a 10% chance of actually happening. Not to say we won't try, but it's something that the orientation leaders even teach the incoming freshmen before they get here. It's kind of inherently messed up.

I do agree that trying to get this changed back to the original would be a good thing. The "ohhhh" rolls of the tounge well and lends well to making noise but "Ohio" is our name. Would be cool if we could get people behind using "Ohio."

I think the initial push for change would be VERY tough like R.P. mentioned but if we can just get it in enough people's heads I bet it could pickup steam really quick. Just look how quickly OU-Oh Yeah took off at football games once it was really pushed.
The nice thing about social media is that is can allow for MASS exposure of ideas very quickly if the right people embrace it. If we want to pursue this, getting in touch with orientation leaders to stress the change and thinking would be a good move and a move we would be well off making ASAP. Orientation leaders, Ohio AD/marketing, student leadership and the 110. Everyone possible. If the students leaders push the idea at home game #1 this year I bet the habits could be changed over this season.

Is anyone against changing back to the "Ohio" ending to the chant??

I'm glad others feel as I do. I've done what I can (being up in northeast OH) by mentioning it again, hoping some of you down there can speak to the right people to make it happen. I'm also proud to say I have the people with season ticket seats around mine saying it the right way now. Baby steps.

Well, it's time for the 110 to start their training week. Has anyone been able to talk to the 110 leaders about getting the O-H-I-O chant right this year? If I knew whom to talk to, I'd send a note myself.

From what I understand the 110 usually gets it right.  No one pays attention to them so it doesn't spread out.

So what's the next group to talk to? Admissions? First gathering of all new students (I think they have one this week, no)? Let's keep pushing.

For what it's worth the 110 does say (and always has said) OHIO vs. Ohhh.

This has always driven me crazy too. Good luck.

As for the 110 doing it the right way, I was watching and listening to the volleyball game yesterday, and when the game was over and the team came to the alumni band, the band did the O-H-I-O chant and ended with "ohhhh." I was Ohhh so disappointed.

Back in the late 1960s, we always ended the chant with OHIO, not Ohhhh. I don't know when that Ohhh business started, but I don't like it. The cheer sounds much less effective the way most of the student body says it now. There should be a movement to revert back to the emphatic OHIO at the end rather than the kind of lack luster Ohhhhh. The cheer as it is done now sounds very ambiguous at the end, rather than a dramatic declaration that we are OHIO!

I say OHIO. Everybody just start doing it. We outnumber the students at the games now by a ton anyway.

Maybe another year, we'll get people to get it right.

Here's a novel idea - How about the "Cheerleaders" - - - "Lead"?

They have 5 placards to hold up as the "cheer" ensues. One each "O", "H", "I", "O" - keep all 4 up through the fast part, then down and up second round slow cadence, all 4 up through the second fast part, then Voila - A 5th at the end "HIO". Have them two sided so wherever they are all see.

Additionally same on the scoreboards video. Same on the future hanging scoreboard video....

Sorta - - - "Well Duh"....

Good idea. How do we make it happen? Who has the connections on campus to talk to them?

You know someone in Marketing is regularly checking in on the board. We'll see if they take any action

I concur . . . get rid of the ridiculous "oooooooh" at the end. The end is "O-HIO." I'm not sure when the 'OOOOOOOH" crap started but it really makes the cheer less dynamic.

Also, how about bringing back that old crowd favorite:

Rip 'em up,
Tear 'em up,
Give 'em Hell
OHIO!

Used to be a standard cheer back in the 1960s and '70s. I think somewhere along the way one of the ADs didn't like it and canned it. It's time to bring it back.

Thanks for listening.
