What did Groce do? I mean, he had an infectious personality...but I'm not sure he actually "did" anything (other than win) to draw student interest. And it's not like we had a drop in student crowds with JC.

Not bashing Groce, but I don't necessarily understand what you're referring to.

OK I didn't know. Still, though, that's more "preaching to the choir" than getting new/casual students to come to games. And I'm not sure a similar approach would work for baseball.

I seem to recall early on that players as well as Groce himself were in dining halls and maybe college gate essentially advertising the program, passing out student tickets, as a basic way to draw additional interest as well

Fare enough but not nearly at the rate baseball has. and compare the TV numbers of baseball compared to other sports. Football and basketball fans lose in game attendance like baseball but gain it back in TV ratings. for baseball this isn't the case.

The world series is so far down this list it's laughable.

The Olympics NBA NFL NCAAFB NCAABB all have better rating than PRO baseball. So if Athens had a Pro baseball team. People would watch the OU football and basketball team more. and that's pro baseball so the fact that college baseball doesn't get many people isn't a surprise.

I am late to the party, but baseball is most definitely a sport where fans LOVE to watch their team, and aren't so into casual watching of the league in general. This is why playoff TV ratings are on the low side. But when you consider the volume of games in baseball, local TV ratings are quite strong.

Our players get heckled at most away games, and heck, some home games too. Georgia Southern was particularly BRUTAL to our team. Sure would be nice to have some loud fans at our home games. I remember attending a game when I was a student against Akron where their coach got ejected and had to sit in the bus. OU student body began to rock the bus back and forth. Good Times at the ole ballpark!

Nice turnout by the Ozone at the volleyball match tonight. Thanks for lending your support folks. The results weren't what we had all hoped for but your enthusiasm for the game made it a real barn burner. Thanks again.

He and his staff showed up and played in on their own dime the annual Green and White Club golf scramble. His wife and Dustin's entered their chili in the annual Power 105 Chili Cookoff. I could go on and on but if JC's wife walked in my front door today I couldn't tell you who she was. John Groce and his staff were highly visible and active members of this community - the biggest negative charge against Tim O'Shea. There are many fans who travel to Columbus to see Illinois play osu. Some even go to Champaign and stay with the Groce's. Nobody is making the trip to Boston.
