Ohio Track & Field started the indoor season off this evening in Columbus at the 2011 Buckeye Classic. In a total of 14 individual events, the Bobcats earned 10 top-5 finishes with Melissa Thompson winning the mile and Alexis Geiger taking the triple jump.

Thompson was one of seven Bobcats to finish among the top 10 in the mile, finishing with a time of 5:00.35. Emily Skidmore finished fifth with Juli Accurso, Ashley Waddington, Brianna Shaw, Lauren Fett and Hannah Skrobot rounding out the group. Thompson also finished ninth in the 3000m with Emily Pifer placing 10th.

Geiger won the triple jump with a leap of 12.21 meters and teammate Shareyna Spears finished fifth with a jump of 10.38 meters. Kristi Sturges finished eighth. Geiger also finished ninth in the long jump, while Spears earned a seventh-place finish.

Ohio's 4x4 relay team had a nice outing, finishing third behind the nationally-ranked Buckeyes top two groups. The quartet of Danielle Winningham, Hope McCarty, Kristi Sturges and Kara Jackson ran a 4:12.12 in the event.

Courtney Weiss finished third in the 600m and was followed up across the finish line by McCarty, who finished fourth. McCarty also finished fourth in the high jump, while Jamie Cavinee finished fourth in the pole vault.

The final top-5 finishes for the Green & White came in the 800m where Erin Gale earned a fourth-place finish and Colleen Kratofil finished fifth.

Other top-10 finishes included Kristen Mason going sixth in the shot put and weight throw, Winningham and Jackson finishing sixth and seventh in the 400m, respectively, Olivia Vitou placing seventh in the 200m and 10th in the 10m hurdles, Brittany Tyree finishing ninth in the same event and Sturges placing 10th in the 200m.

The 'Cats are back at it next weekend when they travel to Kent, Ohio for the Doug Raymond Open on Saturday, Jan. 15.

Does the indoor team have any runners like the Leon kid who graduated a couple of years ago? He may be the best I've seen since Mo!
