The coaches in the MAC, which has added 3 new teams, have picked our Bobcats as the pre-season favorites to win the title. Ohio has 3 wrestlers ranked first and 3 others ranked in the top 4 in their respective weight classes.

Sweet.  Kind of crazy Missouri has to go searching for a wrestling conference.

Well when the Missouri administrators went looking to move they couldn't see past the $$$ for football and very few schools in the south and no schools in the SECheat have wrestling. So affiliate memberships are going to be in style for non revenue sports. But Missouri has a quality wrestling program and the MAC will be better because of this.

Makes me a prOUd Bobcat.  I love that wrestling is an important sport at OU.

It's interesting that there is no wrestling in the SEC.  Add in hockey and lacrosse and there are three well respected, international sports that are also highly regional, I guess.  Does it work the other way with any Southern / Western sports?  For example, I know there are some collegiate surfing and rodeo programs but those couldn't be considered be the equivalent of the other three.

Surfing and rodeo are not NCAA-sanctioned sports, but skiing is. As one would imagine, it's primarily schools in the northeast and in the Rocky Mountain regions. Water polo is much more popular on the West Coast. The top 11 teams in the rankings are all from California, but there are teams from all over. I can't really find any sports that are mostly in the South only, but of course, Southern teams dominate baseball.

Edit: Rodeo has its own college governing board and basically all the teams (some of them junior colleges that compete against universities) are from the West.

There is a good possibility womens college wrestling will be added sometime in the near future. The US women have won 60 medals at the world championships since 1987 which is second only to Japan. They have the 4th most gold medals also with 11.
