I hate we did not get to meet earlier today for Wrestling. App State got invited to NWCA duals and we played Indiana. App is ranked 27 in the country this week and Indiana was 30. So that was a good match up. However I would have enjoyed taking on the Bobcats, ranked 21 I noticed.

Good luck at the MAC and NCAA tournaments. Maybe a few match-up with feature some Mountaineers and Bobcats.

MAC Championships are this weekend at Eastern Michigan. Missouri, ranked #6 in the nation, should win. Kent State is #15, Central Michigan is #19 and Ohio is #20. The MAC got the third-most NCAA qualifier allocations among all conferences. Ohio does not have any favored wrestlers in the MAC but has seven who probably could make the NCAA Tournament, led by Cody Walters, who was ranked eighth in the nations in his weight class by the coaches most recently. He also is the Bobcats' best hope for a MAC title. Some of the MAC's weight classes are loaded with as many as six wrestlers who are ranked.

Cats had 5 place below their seed and 2 finished above their seed and one placed where he was forecast. They have 5 automatic NCAA qualifiers and could get more when the wild cards are announced later in the week. Finished 3rd as a team behind Missouri and CMU which is where I expected them to finish. They did nose out Kent which was ranked ahead of them by half a point. If they had wrestled to their seeds they could have given CMU a run for second but if Kent hadn't lost their best wrestler to injury OU would have finished fourth.

No at large selections for the matmen so they will take 5 to NCAAs. Kelly 133, Chino 157, Reese 165, Walters 174 and Wellington 197 will represent in NYC next week.

Just got word that Laney 125 and Romanchik 184 received invites as well to the big grapple in NYC. That makes a school record 7 wrestlers going forward.

That's awesome. Hopefully a couple of them can place and all of them have good showings.

Cody Walters is into the quarterfinals. One more win would secure him All-American honors.

Cameron Kelly and Andrew Romanchik went 1-1 to stay in contention. Chino Spartak was 2-1.

Shakur Laney and Austin Reese both were eliminated with two losses. Phil Wellington was eliminated with a 1-2 record.

NCAAs today:
125 - Ohio's Shakur Laney lost 8-2 to UNI #9 seed Dylan Peters, then was eliminated with a 9-7 OT loss to Wyoming's Drew Templeman.
133 - Ohio's #13 Cameron Kelly won 14-0 over Buffalo's Bryan Lantry, then lost 14-4 to Oklahoma's #4 Cody Brewer.
157 - Ohio's Chino Spartak lost 7-2 to UNI's Bryce Steiert, then won 2-1 over Virginia's Andrew Atkinson and by pin in 28 seconds against Army's Russell Parsons.
165 - Ohio's Austin Reese lost 7-3 to Rider's #12 Connor Brennan, then lost 2-0 to Duke's Jake Faust.
174 - Ohio's #7 Cody Walters won 7-3 over SDSU's David Kocer, then won 3-2 over Central Michigan's #10 Michael Ottinger to reach quarterfinals. Will face Iowa State's unseeded Lelund Weatherspoon.
184 - Ohio's Andrew Romanchik lost to NDSU's #12 Hayden Zillmer, then won 3-2 over Iowa State's Dane Pestano.
197 - Ohio's #11 Phil Wellington lost 3-1 in OT to Iowa State's Patrick Downey and then beat Lehigh's John Bolich 4-2 and lost 6-1 to Sam Wheeler.

Bobcats are in 18th place in the team standings one half point behind Kent. Missouri from the MAC is tied for 5th place with 17.5 points. Ohio State the defending champs are tied for 2nd place with 24 points. If Walters can win this morning and he should be favored, he could face Ohio States Myles Martin in the semi finals tonight. Winners in the quarterfinals are guaranteed no worse than 6th place and the top eight will achieve All American status.

All four wrestlers lost their first matches today, but Walters just took a 4-2 victory in overtime against MAC rival and #3 seed Blaise Butler of Missouri. Butler went in at Walters' legs and got him over his shoulders, but Walters held on to his legs and eventually worked his way free and on top for a takedown. Walters will be an All-American for the second time in his career and still can work his way up to as high as third place.

Walters was in a close match last night but got pinned, putting him in the 7th-place match a few minutes ago. He got a reversal with only a few seconds left (and then narrowly avoided getting reversed himself as time ran out) to take a 4-3 win to finish 7th in the country in his weight class. He is an All-American for the second time in his career!

Was disappointed by O.U.'s showing in the NCAA's.
But overall the MAC didn't pretty well, including 1 National Champion.

Also, the NCAA's at the Garden was an "event".

Living 20 minutes from the City, my wife and I got to go the Friday and Saturday Sessions (No way we were going into the City on St. Patty's Day).

Ran into a number of Bobcats and Bobcat fans.

Wrestling at this level is so competitive that a one second lapse in concentration can cost you significantly. On paper Walters beats the Iowa State kid in the quarterfinals 7 out of 10 times. That match propelled the ISU wrestler who was unseeded to 5th place and Walters placed 7th which is where he was seeded. The Ohio State wrestler was seeded 11th and wins the weight class over the number 1 seed who had beaten him 3 times previously.

Couple of things:

1.I have a problem when the refs affect the outcome of a match.
141 should have gone into O.T.,but it was apparent the ref. didn't want to have the match decided by a stall call close to the end of regulation. That was the only match where there widespread boos.

2.The kid from Penn State is lucky the kid from OSU put him on his back, close to out of edge or PSU would have been pinned.

3.Toughed match of the tourney.
165 semis.
