Some of you know OHIO has a rich history in men’s and women’s track and field, and in cross country, with two 2 great coaches.

Coach Stan Huntsman had a successful career for 14 years, then moved on to win national championships in his 25 year career at Tennessee and then Texas.

Then Elmore ‘Mo’ Banton, the first Bobcat to win an NCAA national championship, later coached for 23 yrs. He coached ‘Mo’s Girls’ to what I believe is the longest MAC winning streak for any OHIO sport, seven MAC consecutive championships.

OHIO also has 2 Olympians, Les Carney, a silver medalist in the 200 meters in 1960, and Rick Dowswell, with the javelin, 1972.

And OHIO has 6 NCAA champions, including Alfred Ogunfeyimi, winning the NCAA indoor long jump championship without having an indoor facility!

You do realize all of those were basically 50+ years ago. What have you done lately and what do you have to work with compared to your competition.

I was fortunate to have come here when track and field still showed signs of its rich history.

In the late 70's, in front of a huge crowd at Peden Stadium, I got to see 2 time olympic gold medalist (400 hurdles) Edwin Moses who came here to challenge Ohio's All American Bruce Greene in Greene's specialty, the 120 hurdles. Moses won at the wire.

I assume that Dave Wottle ran at Peden too. Does anyone know for sure?

Whottle reference! Olympic champ in a golf hat. Imagine what 2021 Nike could have done with that.

If Wottle was here the great Sid Sink had to have been as well.
