Ohio softball opened the season by going 3-2 in Florida. The Bobcats beat Virginia, 4-0, and Greensboro, 5-2, on Friday. They lost, 12-4 in 9 innings to Lipscomb, and 7-2 to UMass on Saturday. They beat Jacksonville State 3-0 today.
Danielle Stiene threw 2 shutouts and has a 0.94 ERA. Her other start was in the 12-4 loss. Amazingly, the game was 0-0 through 6 innings. Lipscomb got 1 in the 7th and Ohio answered. Lipscomb scored 3 in the 8th and Ohio answered. Steine left after that, and Lipscomb scored 8. (Innings begin with a runner on second in extras).
Mikayla Cooper led Bobcats offensively with six hits, including three for extra bases, and three RBIs. As a whole, the offense struggled a bit. .236 average so far.
Overall, it seemed like a pretty good weekend. I'm sure Ohio would have liked to have won the extra-inning game. Both in the 7th and 8th Ohio had winning run in scoring position with 1 out. The Bobcats play 5 games at NC State next weekend.

Ohio is now 22-13 overall and 10-1 in the MAC after sweeping Kent State yesterday, 4-2 and 22-7 (in 5 innings). The Bobcats hit a MAC-record 7 home runs in the second game. Alex Day hit two of them and had 8 RBIs. She was 5 for 5. The Bobcats are running away with the East title. Buffalo is second with a 6-6 record. There are some better teams in the West, including Toledo at 10-2, Ball State at 7-3 and Central Michigan at 8-4. There's still a long way to go, but Ohio's final four series all are against MAC East teams so it should be in good position to win with the overall regular season title and get the top tournament seed. The Bobcats also have a doubleheader at Ohio State Tuesday and they host Marshall the following Tuesday. Ultimately, it comes down to pitching. Danielle Steine probably has been the best pitcher in the MAC this year. She doesn't quite lead the league in ERA but she is by far the leader in strikeouts and has given up less than one base runner per inning.
