In men’s soccer. Just like that, Akron and Marshall are national powers in men’s soccer... makes you wonder what could’ve been. Maybe we should fire the program back up

Fwiw, both Akron and Marshall relied heavily on foreign players... The recruiting dynamics in soccer are quite interesting.

There's already a pretty good discussion on this in the football board.

The horse is out of the barn on soccer, powers are established, etc.

Where is there space for us to be a bold first-mover? Cricket. Ohio University could lead the way in American university varsity cricket, and dramatically increase our university’s profile in South Asia (and a few other places around the world, but none as cricket-mad as South Asia) while we’re at it

Cricket is quite popular in this park of NJ, as well as parts of NYC.

If O.U. wants, they can hire me as a recruiter. :-)

My vote goes for men's volleyball. Very little competition. A national power by just fielding a team.

FDU is going that route.

They're starting a men's volleyball team.

Even got a $200 K grant from First Point Volleyball.

The team will have a MAC connection.
Their coach, Karl France, is from BGSU.

Would have to get by UCLA and Stanford.

Unless you are a blue blood in soccer, Stanford, Virginia, Clemson, North Carolina etc. then you have to recruit creatively to play with them. Marshall isn't going to attract the 4-5 star HS kid or the MLS Academy kid, those kids are going to the blue blood or soccer elite schools. So going international is the best option if you really want to compete. The kids Coach Grassie brought in would rival a lot of the 4-5 star recruits and MLS Academy kids, if in the US that's who they would be.

Hopefully with a National Title in Coach Grassie's bask pocket some of the doors to 4-5 star recruits and MLS Academy kids open up but if not then he has proven he knows how to win without them.
