It's a shame that we don't have a Men's Soccer team. It's the type of sport that we could actually compete in nationally. There are enough high end teams in our region that we wouldn't have to have a huge travel budget.
Men's D1 soccer was never embraced by O.U.

When I played in the mid 70's, we had 1 scholarship.

One season we had volunteer coach (Dr.Spera).

Starters got shoes.
The rest of us were on our own.
1 uniform for home and away games.

Still played our hearts out.
I got to play with 2 of O.U.'s best: Eric Winders and Sherman Lyle.

Played our home games on the baseball field next to Grosvner Center.
Thats more than swimming had when we cut it.
Swimming didn't even get shoes?! Or a field?!

;-)

They got a towel, a t-shirt and grey shorts with their swim suit. No scholarships, no real workout gear. And when they traveled they would sleep 4 to a room if they spent the night, and get fast food to eat.

Cry my a river. :-)

We were only allowed 1 overnight trip a season.
The rest of the time is was a long bus ride back to Athens

At Miami we were put up in some kind of a dorm.
1 large room with bunk beds.

As far as meals for away games:
Big Boy was haute cuisine .

All I read from you post is if we had soccer we could be relevant. I'll disagree.
Wow - that was your take away from the reading assignment? I hope you didn't buy a blue essay book from the bookstore to present you thoughts. The prof would rip it up in front of you.
Seriously, why is this thread still on the Ohio Football message board?
I agree. But it should not be moved to "General OU Discussion" but rather to "Posting Policy" with the additional rule: "Self serving reading comprehension will not be tolerated - see RE: Marshall wins National Championship in Futball! for prime example."

I know, exactly my point. That is not what Division I athletics should be. DIII schools travel better than some of our non-revenue teams.

FWIW: Marshall just got serious about soccer.

"HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Marshall University’s Men’s head soccer coach, Chris Grassie, is getting a new contract coming off the heels of Monday night’s national championship win.

The MU Board of Governors held an emergency meeting Friday afternoon where board members motioned to approve the new contract for Coach Grassie.

Grassie has been head coach at Marshall since January 2017. This is his fourth season and he lead Marshall to winning the NCAA Soccer Cup Championship. The win marked the first-ever Division I national championship in soccer for the Herd and the first national championship in school history since their football win in 1996.

The base contract is worth $1,878,750 over the next five years."

FWIW: WVU is moving their soccer program from the MAC to CUSA for the 2022 season. I am surprised to see WVU be in a conference with Marshall. There might be a suicide watch in Morgantown?
