That bailout for FirstEnergy stunk to high heaven. Every electric customer in Ohio (even those outside FirstEnergy territory) pays an extra $2.50 a month for the next six years so that FirstEnergy could keep operating two uneconomic nuclear plants (when they ARE operating) and two antiquated coal plants. Oh, and all the green energy incentives were eliminated, giving utilities absolutely no incentive to build anything new. FirstEnergy execs got to keep their phony-baloney jobs while consumers got screwed. https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2019/7/27/8910... .

Dewine signed the damn thing, so I'm a bit surprised he wasn't trapped in the net. Although he handled the pandemic well until Amy Acton stepped down, he's made a lot of enemies in the Republican party so he's likely to be a one-term governor.

As for Householder, it couldn't happen to a more deserving guy. He diminished the office of House Speaker by, among other things, telling other legislators to "grow a pair" and vote for his bill to reduce the authority of the ODH Hope he fries.

Charges below. I am curious to see how First Energy will be dealt with.

Pataskala makes all good points. Making this whole thing even worse is that FirstEnergy and its deep pockets then outspent a citizen's group trying for a voter referendum to overturn HB 6. A lot of people, beginning with Householder, have a lot to pay for in this mess.

From the US attorney's news conference today, this may be just the tip of the iceberg. They've subpoenaed more documents, probably from FirstEnergy, which means some of its execs may be heading to jail eventually and the company will face enormous fines. If that happens, the PUCO might look into the fitness of FirstEnergy to continue operating a utility in Ohio.

It looks like other legislators may be involved as well, since some of the bribe money was used to fund other legislators' campaigns with the quid pro quo being to get Householder elected as speaker so HB 6 could be passed. Meanwhile, there may be a push in the general assembly to halt the collection of charges from consumers before they're begun under HB 6 next year.

I used to play euchre with him back in the day! His nickname at the time was "bowl head", I guess because his dad gave him bowl haircuts growing up.

So giacomo, you'll get a kick out of this. One of my good friends knew Larry from growing up with him in Perry County. When I sent my buddy the link to the arrest article he wrote back "that is exactly why I would not pass him the ball when he was open." I'm still laughing.

I local guy was a member of the 21 member Team Householder. My bet is that he's hiding in the canal over in Nelsonville right now.

I don’t believe you know the background on that relationship. Jay can’t stand Householder and never could. He’s only played ball with him when he absolutely had to to help his district. So, I suspect he’s not hiding in a canal lock but sending up fireworks in celebration!

This is big enough that people might start getting whacked. Remember the Enron VP who was the whistleblower? He had nothing to fear and was in fact considered by most to be a hero in the whole sordid episode. Apparently though he was so racked with guilt that he pulled over on the side of a deserted rural road and put a bullet in his head before the court cases began.

Another Ohio alum also charged in this case. Neil Clark, Bachelors and Masters degrees from Ohio. I knew him when he was an undergrad living in Irvine Hall back in the day. And I think he got his start in politics with the assistance of James Tilling, if any of you guys remember him.

Clark is a lobbyist for a charter school under federal investigation and the payday lending industry. In other words, total scumbag.

Well, you know more about football rules than I do not to mention inside info from the Round House on Richland, but in this case you don't really know what you are talking about. I've talked personally with Jay about Larry going back a few years ago. He and I had the same impression of the scumbag. I never trusted him and neither did Jay.

Thanks.
That was a very interesting article.

I do question the accuracy of the statement that ANY fourth grader could
tell you that Columbus became the state capital in 1812.

Maybe Ohio does a better job of teaching history then N.J.

But,given some of the students I've met out here,I'd be surprised
If they knew what city the state capital was. :-)

Having had conversations with our photo op rep, I have to follow BTC's lead on this one.

I have no idea who your “photo op rep” is and why you give him much credibility. All I can say is that he is misinformed if you are reporting correctly what it is he said about this matter.

The photo op rep is the guy you are defending and who has banned many from his official FB page. Even the ANews - your favorite paper - says Larry's his friend in today's article.
