I recently saw this on another school's sports blog.

quote with redactions as needed:

"I just heard a radio spot saying (xxxx xxx) Vodka is the official vodka of (xxxxxxxxxx) basketball. Really?

Why not Acapulco Gold, the official pot of (xxxxxxxxx) basketball. Or, name your poison."

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thus the debate on which one has caused more misery and destruction.
(but might consider alcohol is legal/available most places and weed is not)

And... is it wrong for a school sports team to take alcohol $$$. Was the rugby or soccer team not sponsored by Stroh's at Ohio in the late 70's? I can't recall which team it was but one had the Stroh's logo on their warmup jackets, IIRC.

Maybe I'll sit this one out and let you guys beat each other up over it. LOL!

I drink Stroh's from time-to-time. Knowing they are a past supporter of OHIO athletics, I guess I will increase my purchasing!

Should they have been required to put an asterisk by the logo stating:

>>> 3.2 only <<<

And if you don't know what that means, you were either not born yet or were not living somewhere in Ohio. We dodged 3.2 in favor of 6 as much as possible but on Sundays... wasn't 3.2 all the stores were allowed to sell?

When I was at O.U. in the 70's,all the bars in Athens were closed on Sunday.

On Sunday nights guys used to drive out of town to a place, I believe it was called Club 33 to drink.

The old Club 33 on old Rt. 33 between Athens and Chauncey was quite a place and was an institution of sorts for generations of Ohio students. I remember that my Uncle Russell, a student here both before and after WWII, frequented that establishment with his girl friend -- and not just on Sundays. Alas, it is no more. The building still stands, but has been many things in recent years, one of which was a used car dealership. It's something else now, but I can't remember exactly what.

The Stroh's brand is now owned by a firm in China I believe. If you're looking for a great read, pick up "Beer Money," written by a great-granddaughter of the founder of Stroh Brewery. Describes how the family squandered its fortune in a relatively short period of time.

On November 13, 2014, Pabst announced that it had completed its sale to Blue Ribbon Intermediate Holdings, LLC. Blue Ribbon is a partnership between Russian-American beer entrepreneur Eugene Kashper and TSG Consumer Partners, a San Francisco–based private equity firm. (Wik)

So, nobody has an opinion on the original question. Interesting.

That's what I get for waxing nostalgic re: 1970's Ohio.

** I never saw a drive-thru beer store until I got to Ohio. Just sayin'

That's it! I've driven by it several times recently, but I just couldn't remember that name. I could have passed a multiple-choice test on it though! ;-) Thanks!

The Stroh's brand is owned by Pabst Brewing Co. (who also ended up owning most of the old brands that were under the Schlitz umbrella because Stroh's had previously purchased Schlitz and its brands).
