Freshman enrollment for next year is projected at 3,800. On an annualized clip factoring about a half of class for 5th year students and transfers the future undergraduate population is projecting 17,100.

https://www.athensnews.com/news/campus/ohio-university-bo...

Last year with the pandemic undergraduate numbers in Athens dipped below 15,000 and projections were made that it would drop to as low as 12,500 by 2024 citing reduced amount of Ohio HS graduates. Truth is mainly the university was outsold which accounted for the drop while other state schools did better. At this juncture I doubt we'll see that 12,500 undergraduate projection.

The 81% retention rate sticks out as a real positive. The 3.59 GPA makes me chuckle.

Everyone's GPA is up so a 3.59 isn't what it was 25 years ago. Cincinnati is now 3.7 GPA which should be the goal for Ohio. 3.65 or 3.66 is close enough to that target.

Potential I don't believe not there for a 3.8 or 3.9 GPA average. Ohio State has a 3.76 GPA but with such a large student body I'm sure many don't have a 3.5.

I stopped paying much attention to GPAs when some scales started exceeding 4.0.

Yeah but a B student in your era and geographic location is an A++ in this neck of the woods.

A lot of schools are banking on 2022-23 to be their make or break enrollment year. A fair amount of students went to community colleges the past couple of years, so if the students don't hit our campus or others next year, what you see with enrollment next fall is what you get for the near future. Lots of nervous administrators this spring and fall, and I am not just talking about state schools, but lots of private schools, even a couple of the vanuted Ohio 5 are in this category.

My alma mater, Muskingum, saw it's largest first year class in over a decade this fall. The kids are out there, they just need to be sold and see the value in enrolling. Keeping the doors open through Covid (20-21) as opposed to going mostly online was a big plus.

Totally agree Alan, those private schools that went live and had a long term plan in the first place appeared to students to be serious players. Those institutions that appear to have no long term plan, went virtual and made students who were on campus feel as though they were under house arrest, probably won't fair that well in the long term. This is what I meant when I talked about the Ohio 5 and the lack of a coherent plan by even some of their members. The discussions I have had with some of those educators were very interesting. They in turn informed me that if I thought their stories were eye-opening, I would have been dumbfounded by the conversations some of them had with their Ivy League counterparts. As one administrator told me; For what we charge, shouldn't we at least pretend we have a long term plan and actually like having students in our classrooms?
