In the plan there is a huge reduction of construction spending beyond the immediate fiscal year or so with only Seifred Hall tapped for major renovation. On slide p.25 it list problem facilities. Of that problem facility list Brown House (demo), Edgehill (demo), Scott Quad (demo), RTEC, Kanter, Wilson and Grosvenor (old HCOM) all do not make the priority to reinvest list. RTEC I'd imagine might be next for demolition.

Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) dollars in millions.

FY20 $210.16
FY21 $104.98
FY22 $60.36
FY23 $70.81
FY24 $69.71
FY25 $43.65
FY26 $25.46

https://www.ohio.edu/sites/default/files/sites/facilities...

On slide p.48 it discusses plans for the three extension campuses; Dublin, Cleveland and Beavercreek. Beavercreek I believe was part of the old Russ Engineering holdings but now they want to build it out to a full extension campus. Dublin which is not far from New Albany and the Intel site is aiming for a joint commercial hotel venture. This might be why talk of putting a conference center hotel at the ridges hasn't progressed from the 2016 master plan. Host the University conferences in Dublin where its closer to the airport in Columbus.

So I guess a coat of paint on Peden ain't gonna happen any time soon. Geesh.

I don't have any problem with downsizing the footprint given reduced enrollment. I like the idea of investing in a Dublin campus to tap into opportunities with the Intel project. RTEC is an eyesore, IMO.

On the positive side, looks like there's a commitment to continue reducing the maintenance backlog.

Where is Brown House? There's Brown Hall on old south green (Front Four).

Are there plans to have any programs in addition to osteopathic medicine at either the Dublin or Cleveland campuses? I didn’t see anything in the plan indicating that there were, but I only skimmed over it.

If they were smart they would. Fertile ground in both places to build our brand.

Dublin already has programing for the College of Business and Voinovich school and they are looking to grow with extension style executive programs. Cleveland doesn't have plans for program growth from what I am aware of. Beavercreek over near Dayton & Wright Patt AFB however wants to build up its research capacity.

A presence near the Cleveland Clinic, Wright Patterson AFB and affluent Dublin gives the university a presence in the economic engines of the state. This is more valuable than operating so many rural branches.

The “rural branches” are part of our core mission of educating the citizens of Southeastern Ohio.

You have to go to the very last bullet point of this to find any relationship to the region.

I can see the rest of "Dirty South" being demolished in the coming decade along with Scott Quad. I'm excited for the new Innovation Center being built for the engineering college and the possibility of a basketball practice facility - they deserve it. Very eager to see what campus will be like when I take my kids back down here to see it 15-20+ years from now.

My understanding from reading this is the financial assistance is in place to to just cover the amount beyond what the Pell Grant cannot pay. The university still to a large extent still gets its revenue.

This is similar to how student athletes now have COLA in addition to their athletic scholarships to fill expense gaps.

The question then is how much is tuition at the branch campuses above the Pell grant limits ($6,495 in 2022-23) to begin with? Chillicothe is listing them at $5674. The regional promise then helps students at the higher end of the Pell Grant income criteria who don't qualify for the full grant amount.

https://www.collegetuitioncompare.com/edu/204820/ohio-uni... /

Its not a bad program to help enrollments at branch campuses but the matriculation to Athens with the $5000 one scholarship is still quite expensive COLA for the student.

On a related topic, the Dispatch is running a series of articles on higher ed in Ohio's Appalachian Counties. Here's today's article.

The Dublin Center not only houses our programs, chiefly the Medical School, but also has a floor used by Columbus State which gives us more exposure. With the new shopping center and widened roads and roundabouts near there (including a Costco, Aldi, sports bar etc) we have great visibility with the increasing traffic to those places and the burgeoning residential areas. There was a fair amount of construction vehicles shortly before and after the onset of Covid, so I am not sure what needed work, but hopefully, we won't need any further work done for a while to help ease our tight budget.

I realize I sound like a broken record but the amount of postive feedback I hear from folks about the Dublin Campus, especially those in the medical profession is a complete trunaround from years past. I would hear ridiculous stories that our medical school was a political kickback orchestrated by former Congressman Clarence Miller, as well as crony alums on both sides of the statehouse aisle who ramroded the medical school through the powers that be. It was ridiculous and made no sense, but it made rounds of gossip and speculation. Now all you hear is positive news--doctors who think it would be a great place for their prospective medical students!

Yes, those rumors were ridiculous. Rep Miller was not an important player. It was the Ohio Osteopathic Association, key members of the Ohio legislatiure that they lobbied, Harry Crewson, and James Rhodes. One specific person who was very crucial -- was Harry Meshel, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. George Dunnigan, the head lobbyist for the OOA, who at the time was listed in the Columns Dispatch as one of the top ten lobbyists in the state, was very effective at lining up the votes. There were many others, but those are a few of the key players.

Thanks for your personal insights Ohio Cat Fan, that was really helpful. I haven't heard those ridiculous stories in years, probably since our medical school added the Dublin and Cleveland campuses. We are certainly on the rise and as I mentioned some of those same people who were spreading those rumors years ago are now encouraging their kids and grandkids to attend our medical school. Now if we could only get an effective plan for the rest of the university to raise their stature, we would be in business.

Cbus Cat Fan: Another, perhaps bigger factor, among doctors is the vastly improved relations between allopathic and osteopathic medicine today. Much of what you heard from MD’s back in the early days of our medical school was misinformation based on deep-seat prejudice, which in turn was based on ignorance and misinformation. In our region, one of the purveyors of this prejudice was the Holzer family. They had allies statewide including the Ohio State Medical Association and the Ohio Board of Regents, to name but a few. It was a very difficult, uphill fight to create our College of Osteopathic Medicine. I believe that in addition to shrewd politics that Providence played a key role.
