I submit the following for a little perspective on the meaning of the flag.  The following article refers to the heroism of Sgt. William Carney of the 54th Massachusetts and the unsuccessful assault on Ft. Wagner during the late Rebellion.  The 54th Mass was, of course, a colored regiment, which was the subject of the movie Glory.  If you've never seen this movie, I highly recommend it.

Here's a URL to the whole article: http://tinyurl.com/y8xjv2qp

Here's key quote from the article:

Carney was escorted to the rear. “An officer of the day came and took my name and regiment and putting me in charge of the hospital corps told them to find my regiment,” he recalled. The corpsmen led Carney to a group of 25 to 30 of his comrades and one lieutenant, Alexander Johnston of Company F. Carney remembered, “When I reached these men they cheered me and the flag, and my reply was ‘Boys, the old flag never touched the ground,’ and I delivered it from my own hands to” Lieutenant Johnston.

Sgt. Carney's statement that "the old flag never touched the ground" was immortalized in a song that became popular around 1900.  Below are the orignal lyrics of the chorus of that song:

'Twas the Blue against the Gray, Boys,
And he said to all around,
"I've only done my duty boys,
The old Flag never touch'd the ground.
"I've only done my duty boys,"
He said to all around,
"I've only done my duty boys,
It never touched the ground.

And, here's the 1st verse:

Again the fires of soldier-life are kindled to my view,
And I recall the bloody strife that made our nation new,
When 'Camp Fires' of the Colored man, a book with title rare,
I read with pride, with pleasure scan, to learn our helpful share.

Another quote, from Wikipedia, gives further understanding to Sgt. Carney's deeds:

The account of Sgt. Carney's action as it appeared in The United States Service Magazine, 1864:

As our forces retire, Sergeant Carney, who has kept the colors of his regiment flying upon the parapet of Wagner during the entire conflict, is seen creeping along on one knee, still holding up the flag, and only yielding its sacred trust upon finding an officer of his regiment. As he enter the field-hospital, where his wounded comrades are being brought in, they cheer him and the colors. Though nearly exhausted with the loss of blood, he says, "Boys, the old flag never touched the ground."

Just so we're clear, the NFL is bringing in record revenue.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/06/nfl-will-... /

The ratings, while down, are still the highest of any product on TV. I would venture to guess that a proliferation of entertainment options is a bigger cause of the ratings changes than players' protests are. Ratings are also down for MLB, NBA, and the NHL. People just don't watch as much sports on TV anymore, but NFL is still king.

And good on these players for calling out injustice. They obviously understand the meaning of the flag way better than our shallow, idiotic, divisive President.

I commend the players, owners and others using their voice. What is unfortunately lost in today's news is that POTUS is so offended by these "son of a bitches" making a statement yet had to be conjoled and pressured into personally denouncing white supremacists marching in Charlottesville chanting "Jews will not replace us" and "blood and soil."

He can call out "spoiled millionaires" but should start by addressing a certain "ignorant billionaire."

Don't forget this crap starting with Kap kneeling when Osama was President. Did he serve the country? Some hollow arguments make it a Trump issue my friends.
Trump yesterday became involved in the issue. The issue is about police brutality and the social struggle. It was never about Trump until he placed himself in it. Funny though, easy and qucik to defend the racist White hate groups, but quick to denounce black athletes.

The first three words of the constitution are We the people and we are being divided by a demagoguery laced, racist and ignorant president who used his freedom to get his lawyers to keep his ex wife's rape story out of her book. He used our flag to file BKO six times and not pay federal taxes for years. He also colluded with and is protective of Russian president Putin who is paying taliban fighters to send our soldiers home in body bags. He went to Alabama to tell people to vote for a man who decided to sign a bill because he allegedly worshipped the president and used the time to throw some red meat to his ignorant base with his NFL statement. He called the nazi's some fine individuals and the black protesters who donate millions to build unity some son's of b's. By doing this, he made himself look patriotic and he took the attention off his failing pledge to repeal and replace the ACA and diverted attention from the revelations of his former campaign manager offering to give Russian oligarchs briefings on his campaign shenanigans. The thing about it is that the protest were dying down until he opened his mouth. Let's pray that Trump gets a soul and let's pray that his base wakes up and forces him to look out for we the people. We the people being everybody, not just his worshippers.

Full disclosure - I started this post for two reasons - one, because I enjoy the conversation with other OU affiliated posters, and two, because, I feel we are in a mess in this country. I post the latter because of my experiences of the last 34 years working in school from Maine to Minnesota to Memphis to Wilmington, NC, and what I've seen and heard from the youth of this country. Informed and intelligent conversation will only make us better and I applaud and thank those who have posted so far that we have had a civil discussion.

It's about both, as everyone knows. You have a constitutional right to burn the flag if you want to. That doesn't mean you should. A little historical context never hurt anyone.

Burning the flag has been held to be constitutionally protected "symbolic speech." Kneeling for the national anthem is constitutionally protected; and, would probably be considered symbolic speech as well. However, one should be careful and thoughtful about how one uses the constitutional rights that one has. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. I'm not making a case here for or against the current NFL controversy, I'm simply trying to supply a little context that perhaps some have not considered. BTW, feel free to ignore, if you'd like. It's a free country!

What will be the end-game of all this kneeling, I wonder? How will the country be "healed" by this kneeling? Since the point is about police brutality, I wonder if police departments across the USA will suddenly change their policies?

How soon can we expect the healing to begin? I wonder if all the kneeling participants know what the issue is? The female singer who kneeled after the performance? The 8-year-old youth football players? I wonder if white people are capable of understanding the complexities here?

In my humble opinion (which I think represents the majority of America, but not the majority on here) it is all completely pointless grandstanding. When you wear the team uniform, you represent something bigger than yourself. If, on your own private time, you'd like to devote yourself to certain charities, etc...that is fine. But on the field, you are using your team and the NFL as a platform for your own beliefs and to gain attention for yourself. And to me, there's no place for that. Also, politicizing the National Anthem is ridiculous. There are plenty of outlets for debate, but that's something that should be bigger than our petty political battles.

Fans watch sports as an escape from the crazy world of politics. As soon as you start introducing politics into sports, it turns a lot of people off. The teams that have issued statements against Trump are crazy for getting involved in this. The smart owners aren't touching this with a 10 foot pole.

If I'm an owner, I'm changing the pregame timeline so that neither team is on the field for the anthem. That's how it is in college and high school anyway (for the most part) right now. No coach wants this sort of sideshow distraction.

Several teams did this today, and it's a surprisingly intelligent solution. They were able to protest without actually doing anything that would upset their paying customers. That may very well be where we end up.

I will not weigh in on if the issue behind the kneeling is right or wrong, I simply mean to show a different perspective and say there are other means to show discontent. For all of you I asked the question: have you ever been in a war? Have you ever served in another country for several years? For those of us that have, that flag is more than a piece of cloth. It represents the ideal of the best form of government the world has ever seen. It represents freedom to do many things that in countries we serve in that are against the law, it represents the hope that we will return to our own country in one piece sooner rather than later. So to see spoiled rich athletes not respect the flag is upsetting at best. We have many ways to protest in this country, why not use a method that doesn’t disrespect the very symbol that gives you the right to do it.

I think Sgt. William Carney, if he were alive today, would agree with you. He literally risked his life for that flag in the most heroic manner imaginable. Like you I'm not passing judgement on those who choose this method of protest. It is their right. However, as I said earlier, sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.

Literally, 95% of everything referenced in this post is plain wrong, exaggerated or just ludicrous opinion. I'd bet anyone $1,000 today that Trump win reelection in 2020. And yet, as his last term runs out in 2023, there will still be crying over "Russia" and "racism" by those intent to bring him down. The only thing struggling right now is the Democratic Party, with no message and some of the worst fundraising numbers in history. This culture war stuff doesn't win votes.

I have been to Afghanistan with the 170th IBCT. I was on bases where we had to stop our car and salute the flag or face UCMJ. A protest by it's own nature is civil disobedience to bring attention to your issue. Blacks feel like they are being treated like second class citizens, other demographics feel like they are treated that way as well so they are exercising their freedom together to protest. I commend any American that exercises their right to protest. I was deployed to Afghanisatan where lots of people (Afghans) could not read and spoke Pashtun, but said an Arabic prayers five times a day. They had no choice. North Korea's alarm clock is a praise song to their crazy leader at 5:30 in the morning. That is what we call Facism, I also witnessed the Bundy Clan take federal buildings and pull guns on federal authorities and their was hardly an uproar. If those were black people that seized those properties, they would have probably benn treated as enemy combatants and hit with air strikes. They definitely would have got convicted. So if you claim principle, apply it both ways. God bless

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Trump managed to make himself the focus of week 3 of the NFL season. That guy's ploys for attention work every single time.

As far as the protests themselves, I respect the players' right to protest for sure. On the other hand, when the players are kneeling every week I feel like it loses effectiveness and becomes divisive. In general it'd be better if both sides put less emphasis on symbolic gestures like this and more emphasis on advocating for their point of view and solving problems. But I think the anthem protests raised awareness and that's positive. Doesn't mean they have to keep going on forever (although, yeah we have to keep working on the underlying issues).

The flag is meaningless unless we provide the same level of respect to each other that folks are saying the flag deserves. Respecting and providing each other the rights and freedoms we all should have is more important than a symbol of those rights and freedoms. Hopefully the kneeling will continue to bring awareness to the challenges many face in our country. A protest in itself does not bring about change, it brings about awareness and dialogue....and ultimately...hopefully change.

I thought football was considered a "game"? Making it a political game is wrong on all accounts. We all have our own opinions and mostly not very informed ones at best. My take is this all started with the previous president. His actions woke up the racist in whites and blacks alike. Our problem is that we only get our information from the media. Do you believe everything they put out there? I for one don't trust what "any" of the networks say anymore and frankly rarely watch the local news anymore. The police brutality may well be reported mostly from one side. My guess is that there many of the same situationas involving whites and other races as there is blacks. You just don't get it highlighted in the media.
We can get our arses in an uproar over the craziest of things. How many times have I seen you all complain about the white hairs or old geezers, or what ever we've been called for not standing up at our games to cheer, clap, yell our fool heads off because that's what we are supposed to do at the game to support our "bobcats". Maybe that's my form of protest to sit in the front row on my fat arse and just enjoy the game. The players in the nfl are being paid to play the game, not politicize it. We have freedoms but there are limits to those freedoms. Yes, there is freedom of speech, but you can be held accountable for what you say! It is not a total freedom.
By the way, our league does not play the National Anthem or raise the flag until both teams are on the field and lined up with helmets off. For the good of our country, maybe we all should take a lesson and work together in support of of "our country. I'm afraid if we don't our future is not looking good.
