Bates was pulled over after failing to stop at an intersection, where police then discovered a firearm. He faces two felony charges: one for carrying a concealed weapon and another for trying to file off the serial number.

YIKES.

Kid is tragically on his way to becoming a cautionary tale.

Jeez. Will be an interesting 30 for 30 in the future. I'm not sure how he is going to salvage his career from this

Next steps... declare for NBA draft. Go undrafted. Struggle to catch on in Summer League. Back to Michigan around the same crowd that he needs to carry a gun around.

Sad.

Lawyer claims he borrowed someone’s car. Nonetheless, needs a different crowd around him for sure.

Was really looking to see what he could do at the MAC level with Farrikhan on EMU. EMU claims he is the first five star player in the MAC but I'm skeptical on that claim. Has there been a five star guy in the past? I know Sears was a four star

Just a shame to watch him crash and burn like this.

Certainly could be true. Innocent until proven guilty.

Why is a FIVE star player at EMU?
Oh.

Now on another note. Why is it fine for WHITE rednecks to carry concealed weapons in Ohio?
Oh.

And maybe the least of all troubles...does the NCAA allow athletes to "borrow" a car?

The message EMU put out at the time stressed that he was from Ypsilanti and wanted to return home.

Oh.
These are the actual requirements for concealed carry in Ohio. I believe they apply to all Ohioans.

https://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/CCWManual

While training and licensing is highly recommended, it is not required. I wonder what percentage of residents of different areas of the state are carrying now. I know of no study that has been done on this matter. My guess is that it's pretty high in urban areas as well as in many rural areas.

OCF, in that entire 34 pages of drivel that you posted from the Ohio AG, the only requirement needed comes from the 4th paragraph of inside page 1.

This means that any Ohioan
21 or older who is not prohibited by law from possessing a firearm can carry
a concealed handgun.

I need NOTHING else, than to be an OHIOan to carry and possess a firearm. I need no training, need no ones approval.

Even here in backwoods (or is it backwards?) Ohiotucky, if Bates were an Ohio resident pulled over in Ohio, 1) he isn't 21 and 2) in the car was a weapon illegally modified to hide/remove the serial number.

Innocent until proven guilty, but even here he would be in trouble. As would anyone else in his predicament.

I have never been stopped by law enforcement for an intersection violation so I do not know the answer. If you or I was stopped for running a red light or stop sign, is it standard operating procedure for law enforcement to check my vehicle for weapons, drugs, contraband during a traffic stop like that?

Funny because I've had my car searched before and I've never been guilty of DWB. Is it possible that because it wasn't his car he didn't have the registration and/or POI?

Black Guy in a nice car gets me every other month. What's crazy is you can see the entire fiasco play out in their eyes.
1. Controlled demeanor mildy professional but nervous eyes..hand on or close to his sidearm..partner on passenger side hand shaking on gun..
2. "Benign" questions (fishing) about your paperwork, comings and goings..job(how can you afford this car boy) , favorite Sports team..if it's OSU then why you got a gold duffle bag and you wouldn't mind if we looked in it.
3. Disappointment in their faces when no prior, clean paperwork but here comes THE DWB Hail Mary of course you don't mind if we search or bring the K9 if you have nothing to hide step out of the car.
AFTER ALL THAT "HAVE A NICE DAY"

I usually gotta throw up afterwards and I'm late for work AGAIN.

P.S I SOLD THAT CAR.

How did he make himself a target. That's some BS.

Did Kyle Rittenhouse "make himself a target" or "crash and burn".

Weird double standards here.

There's a WHOLE lot of assumptions being tossed about here. Pretty disappointing. Has recent history not taught us to maybe wait until all of the facts come out before we throw out theories?

In this case, facts are the facts.

I'm not familiar with Michigan law, but in most jurisdictions (every county in Ohio) when you assume control over the vehicle, it's your responsibility to check the vehicle. You assume possession for everything in the car.

It's a felony to be in possession of an unregistered firearm.

It's certainly plausible he just has terrible friends, but that doesn't make him less responsible for what he's being charged.

It's all quite disappointing.

Once again.

Kyle Rittenhouse. Underage, Unregistered Gun. Straw Purchase. Openly Carry blasting away then walking past Cops.

Kinda like why didn't a minor Trayvon Martin have the Right to "Stand His Ground" against an armed adult stranger following him at night.

Twist away Mr Pretzel.

Back on topic:

Definitely not good for EMU, they had actually been selling tickets and pushing through record numbers. Feel bad for them there.

But everyone knew him coming back was going to be a problem. His handlers back in Michigan were not the best and for him to be in Memphis was the best thing. Heck, MSU pulled his offer after his handlers screwed over a fellow MSU commit. It's why sometimes it's good to get away from home, especially when dealing with situations that people can muck up.

Hopefully it was a situation where he was actually driving someone else's car. But at the end of the day, you cannot put yourself in those situations where you know darn well what your buddy does and has. You can't tell me he had zero idea that it was in the car.

Nonetheless, definitely puts EMU back in the bottom of the pack, and will be interesting to see what kinda coaching job Heath does this year.
