Where’s Senator Robert Byrd when they need him? He would simply get a bill through Congress to give WVU a big supplement of some sort and move another federal government agency to Morgantown, and located it on the WVU campus with a large annual payment to WVU. You may think I’m joking, but I’m really not.

Pretty wild numbers in there, honestly.

They're getting rid of 12 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate majors. But only 147 undergraduates & 287 graduate students would be impacted.

Grad programs are often small, so the headcount doesn't surprise me there. But that's an average of 12 people per major on the undergrad side. Seems very low for such a big university.

At that point, are they even a real university or just a trade school?

Any idea how they came to this point? Massive enrollment declines? Massive state budget cuts? In any event, it seems like Gordo Gee wasn't the answer. Did he just run around the last few years in his bow ties shamelessly promoting his cult of personality while not actually doing anything? Maybe his previous successes had more to do with the resources he walked into at OSU and Vanderbilt and less to do with any great driving leadership on his part.

Well, that sums it up pretty well. Massive state budget cuts + enrollment declines + incompetent leadership (did he really think he was going to turn WVU into OSU?) + political hostility towards any libruhhl education = disaster.

So, Gee's pretty much been run off at three of his last four jobs: Brown, OSU 2.0 and now WVU 2.0

Per the below link, the fall enrollment at wvu for the fall of 2022.

"WVU Morgantown Campus enrollment is 24,741.
Students at the Morgantown campus come from 115 nations, 50 U.S. states (plus D.C.) and all 55 West Virginia counties; 11,472 are West Virginia residents.

wvu has always depended on out of state students for enrollment.The population of WV is declining and the potential pool of students is also declining. One private college in WV Alderson Broaddus just closed.

Alderson Broaddus just closed their doors as well and the state rescinded their ability to grant degrees. Gov. Justice is running the state like he did his business, taking handouts while suffering massive debts.

I not sure what Justice has to do with the closing of Alderson Broaddus which is a private school? AB hadn't payed their utility bills for months so their water; sewage and electricity was going to turned off due to the school owing nearly $800,000 for the utilities. The school was on the verge of losing its accreditation so a WV State agency closed it. I think the school only had 600 students and the state didn't want the school closing in the middle of the school year and the students losing their tuition. Apparently AB didn't have much of an endowment and been living off a loan from the Feds which will now cost the taxpayer. The school just ran out of money and students.

More news. VP of talent and culture to retire and he will not be replaced. He was making 275k. This is one example of the admin excess at schools. What the heck is VP of talent and culture?

State budgets have been cut

Again, AB was a private school and didn't receive any state funds. AB failed due to declining enrollment and the fact they couldn't raise money.

FWIW: The WV legislature appropriated $45 Million for the new Marshall Cyber Security Program (building). This is the same dollar amount of the wvu deficit. Apparently wvu asked for the money to cover its deficit and was refused. I think Gee might on the hot seat per the below link.

That's very interesting. Of course, it comes from the capital improvements budget which is separate from general funding of colleges, but nonetheless that does show a shift in legislative educational priorities since the days that I was at Marshall, when many around West Virginia, and even in Huntington, referred to WVU as "The University." And, the legislature acted like they thought WVU was the only university in the state when it came to appropriations. Marshall had to fight for every scrap!
