Speaking as a native and close relative of a number of people in the immediate area, my hat is off to the Muskingum County Sheriff and Deputies who have prevented this from being a much more dangerous situation than it turns out to be as of this morning.

Sheriff Lutz has handled the whole affair very well consdering the sudden influx of national media representatives.  Unfortunately, the reputation of the property owner and the "preserve" probably told him long ago that this day was inevitable.

Speaking of media, it didn't take Jack Hanna long to get over there and insert himself in front of the cameras, did it?

Sheriff Lutz has done an amazing job.  I am positive that Mr. Thompson was on their radar and that something like this was not toally unexpected. 

If there is a camera around, Jack Hanna will be in front of it, that is for sure.

I disagree that Jack Hanna was just there to get in front of the cameras. He is a nationally known figure and his contacts with the Columbus Zoo and The Wilds were needed. He will be spearheading the push for better exotic animal control laws so a situation like this will not happen again.

I don't dispute Hanna's value in the bigger picture.  I do dispute his front and center presence at the news briefings at a crime scene.  Especially so when the Sheriff calls the news conference over and Hanna steps up to the mic and continues it of his own volition.  But, that's probably my small town thinking coming out

Seems to me Jack Hanna proactively diffused any blowback for the killing of all these animals.  You read the list of all the animals killed and you can't help but wonder if there was another way.  Jack Hanna has national respect.  When he says this was very unfortunate but had to be done, it goes a long, long way.

Hanna did do a good thing in speaking out that way.  This area, despite being referred to as a "farm" or a "preserve" is basically just on the outskirts of Zanesville and in a populated area.  Near an elementary school, near the Village of Gratiot, bordering I-70, etc.  Think East State Street / Canaanville area in Athens. 

I have relatives who probably heard the gunshots from their bedrooms.  The cynical side of me would like to gather and publish the names of everyone who disputes for even a second that putting these animals down immediately was the right decision.  Imagine yourself face to face with a frightened and disoriented male lion armed only with a handgun.  I'm very proud of my homeboys.

Well said.  That's exactly what I thought.  His credibility help convince doubting skeptics, like my wife, that this had to be done.  That being said, I heard that they also killed a camel and a zebra.  Those animals are vegetarians and posed no threat to human life.  Unless these animals were caught in the cross fire, or killed by one of the cats, I don't quite understand it.  But, overall, this was handled well.  If it hadn't been we'd be reading today about the funerals for all those killed by the lions, tigers, etc.  I, too have relatives in Zanesville, I haven't yet heard their take on the matter.

I heard the shots from my bedroom.  I have nothing but positive things to say about the way that the officers, especially the first on the scene handled themselves.  From my understanding, it was a very dangerous and frightening situation to be put in.

Jack just wanted to go to Muskingum County to visit his alma mater in New Concord.  His presence and words served as preventive action before those who would criticize the shooting of the animals could get started.
