The second sell out show in Mem Aud in 8 days. Harkens back to the days when OU and Athens were a regular stop on the national concert tour scene. Jason Isbell played to an energized and receptive audience last night. His version of Poncho and Lefty was outstanding. Great show and can't wait until Drew schedules the next big one.

Saw Isbell about 2 years ago in Columbus with his band, the 400 Unit.

Thought last night's acoustic show was more intimate, for obvious reasons - a small auditorium and it being a solo show. Isbell shared interesting stories (about David Crosby, Bob Dylan, John Prine to name a few) between songs. He also showed a good sense of humor. Finally, I thought last night's show had a better playlist.

Isbell, in my opinion, has taken over the reigns as the best singer/songwriter going today. Glad I made the trip but made for an early alarm this morning.

Alan, any thoughts on the warmup performer?

Had you and I attended the conference sessions and asked about booking warm up acts, I'm sure we would have learned a great deal - budget, availability, relationship to the headliner, preference of the headliner, etc. Not knowing of any of that I can't be too critical. That said, the fellow is a long way from headlining his own show. Good voice and had to like his Hendrix style of playing.

I came away more interested in the content of his songs, some he sung in English while others in French. He did mention that if we think the United States is a country divided we should take a look at his home country, The Ivory Coast. Some of his songs addressed this issue.

Excellent point about his lyrics and message. He was clearly singing from the heart about things that were important in his life and living. I caught the same message when he basically think "so you think you have things bad, come check out my country." That said it makes you wonder what one locked or unlocked door on January 6th might have led to in this country.

Saw him at Springfest in the early 80s when there were four fests each May/June - South Green, East Green and West Green Weekends the Spring Fest. Drinking age was 18 so the University was a full partner in all of those.

I used to see Willie in Columbus in the late 70's both with his groups Romantic Noise/The Buttons (got them booked to open a big show at The Agora) and doing his own acoustic thing in small rooms like Bernie's Bagels & Deli.

Other than being left handed and black, to me he had nothing in common with Hendrix. (At least in those days). There was a guitar player from Springfield living in Cbus back then named Joe Quisenberry who made people think he was actually maybe Hendrix reincarnated. He was REALLY good.\

Here's the fellow. Played acoustic guitar Wednesday night. The Hendrix reference was only to him playing right handed.
