I agree Alan it's ugly and doesn't make those attending look like candidates for the good citizenship award any time soon.  I just love the guy who yells out saying this is "just like Nazi Germany." The cop retorts something to the effect, "You've had a lot of experience with that."  Whereupon the moron comes back with something close to, "Well actually I have."  Given his age, he clearly hasn't had any experience whatsoever with Nazi Germany.

Following #Palmerfest on Twitter last night was fascinating. 9 out of every 10 tweets seemed to think the fact  that someone's house was on fire was hilarious and something to be proud of. Sad.

Gotta agree with Swank, I'm not sure if it's the aggression or the stupidity that we see in these groupthink situations that are worse. It's like nobody had any idea why the police might need to create a perimeter so the firefighters could... you know, put out the house that was on fire that people had been watching burn for a few minutes. Try getting out of the way so rescue workers can do their job and make sure nobody gets injured or dies.

I'll be really interested to hear how that fire started. $5 says it's going to be a pretty stupid reason.

PS: OCF, that Nazi Germany comment was one of the dumbest but I think "then we took a shot to the basement being on fire" probably takes the cake. The interview with the girl who lived their drinking straight from a bottle of wine is ripe for an Internet meme.

Dispatch article today says cigarette tossed into basement window started the fire.

The girl w/the wine bottle was drinking something else outta the bottle. Looks like beer in a Barefoot Moscato bottle - and if she indeed finished off that wine first (herself presumed) before refilling at the keg, and that the botlle now less than 1/2 full of beer - she had by the time of the video consumed the equivalent of 8 beers (at least)............and it wasn't much past 7:00 PM!

I'm a big fan of street parties. It's Spring. There should be loud music and beer and students letting off steam, and if they're lucky, hooking up.

That said, there should be some serious punishments and expulsions for the freaking morons who threw stuff at firemen. Are you kidding me? I'm going into a burning building to save property and possibly lives and I have to dodge beer from some half-wit, f**ktard douchebag?  Good riddance. You are not Ohio.

<back in my day rant>Palmerfest used to be about chilling out on a grand scale. More people didn't mean more idiocy, it just meant more people enjoying themselves in the same spot. The highlight of the day was if you found someone with house beer to hook you up and the most dangerous activity was going to Bob's Market to score a 12pk for some underaged coeds.

THESE people party like they've never been to Athens. lame. </rant>

I am so glad I didn't go to Palmer Fest yesterday. it's normally fun but it's always full of the biggest tools on campus. To see that a lot of fellow students were proud that there was a house on fire yesterday is embarrassing.

I love OU but I hate the idiots that make our school look bad. There's nothing wrong with being a party school but there is something wrong with not being accountable for your actions and acting retarded like so many people were yesterday.

The videos didn't seem that bad to me.

Not as bad as Kent State where they had to bring in cops with tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Yes, the fire was bad, but the rest of the crowd is just peacefully standing on the sidewalks. Pretty tame if you ask me.

No relevance at all.  Just a matter of putting stuff where people will see and read it.  On the flip side, all of the relevance in the world.   For all of the good that OU athletics achieved/accomplished this year - this sort of has the effect of transferring the focus from the positive to the negative.

It's official. Arson.

For $5k, whoever set it should be worried. Someone had to see something and on a student salary $5k is quite the reward.

Had to go to the bank so I just drove by there.  The sign on the front door says ARSON.  One would hope that it wouldn't take a reward to find the culprit.

He said "you know a lot about that." To which the guy replied "yea I do actually." It's certainly possible that he knows a lot about Nazi Germany despite his age.

Thanks for checking the actual wording.  I'll trust your transcript.  I didn't go back to listen to it again to get the exact wording.  That being said the cop's tone of voice implied he was talking about "knowing" from personal experience.  Perhaps, the student took it more literally.  Or, perhaps, I misinterpreted the cop's meaning.  However, my son interpreted it the same way I did and thought the cop had the perfect put down for the student's asinine original statement comparing the APD to the SS.

Comparing the City of Athens' reaction to Palmerfest with Nazi Germany proves the guy knows nothing about Nazi Germany.  What a complete idiot.

I completely agree that it's a stupid comparison and the guy is either an idiot or a drunk college kid who doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut. I'm going to go with number two. I'd venture to guess that in a few years he'll watch that video and wonder "why the heck did I act so dumb?"

With that being said, I think the stuff with the horse running over the kid was completely uncalled for. They were not on Palmer Street and the kid wasn't trying to go toward the fire. He was calmly walking back toward the dorms. Granted, we may not have seen the entire situation in that video, but I would not be surprised if the cop was the instigator.

You can ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you I'm about as mild-mannered and respectful as anyone you will meet. In my personal experience in Athens, OUPD was always very helpful and always handled situations very well. APD, on the other hand, always seemed to enjoy the power that comes with their position just a little too much. In one experience a friend and I were walking down Mill Street at about 7:00 pm on a Saturday. I think it was High Fest weekend, but we were no where near that fest. My friend joked that he was tired and that he might just call it an early night. I chastised him and punched him on the arm. A police officer came charging in on a horse and started screaming at us. We explained that we were friends, that we were not actually fighting, and that we were very sorry that our behavior might have been interpreted that way. He called us "punks," "immature," and threatened to arrest us if we did not immediately go home and stay there. My friend replied, "okay officer, thank you so much, we'll go straight home" to which the officer grinned, put his hand right in my friend's face and said "buh-bye." Needless to say, his behavior was just a tad unwarranted considering the situation.

Let's just say that there probably aren't too many among us who could or would handle being on the APD during fest time with absolute grace.  The temptation to "run" everyone who opens their mouth must be tremendous.

As long as we're divulging personal anecdotes, the memory I like to keep occurred during the first Halloween party when my roommate and I happened (literally) to be standing in front of a jewelry store across from the Court House when someone in the street broke the window, probably with a Court St brick.  We stayed because we figured running would be worse and when the APD came over, they listened to our story and calmly told us to get off the street and go home.  It could have ended much, much worse for us.  To this day, I have a soft spot in my heart for the APD and little tolerance for people who taunt them and behave like morons.

Here's another video that might be both shorter and stupider than anything I've seen so far.

I didn't think it was possible to be dumber than 'the basement's on fire, let's do a shot' girl, but evidently it is.

See, I feel for the pizza girl because I don't think she was that drunk and just said a couple things I imagine she wishes she had back. I can easily see them hearing the basement is on fire, not believing it, someone joking, "To the basement on fire!" and everyone takes a shot as a joke.

The jumper, though, is just flagrantly stupid.
