This could be most interesting. The alleged sketchiness of the move has folks up in arms including what some on here will call the usual suspects. This will make national news.

So what does this have to do with Ohio University basketball?
My guess is the thread about McDavis' house in the Green & White forum wasn't getting enough hits so Alan made the strategic decision to place it here.

A good journalist could find quite a few unusual things about it if they would just dig a little. No, it's not unusual for a president to live off campus - that is true. I think it's a combination of the uniqueness of the OU situation, the parties involved, the reasons given for the move, and the $1.2 million that has appeared out of midair when so many facilities on campus are in dire need of repair.

Not really. I didn't even see the thread when I posted about the bat protest. But you are right that there is way more traffic on the basketball and football boards.

I don't have any real problem with the move so I am amused by all the effort being taken to justify it - bats or not.

What I do find interesting is how the perfect house just happened to be sitting vacant and available in Athens when it became a "crisis" in need of a solution. There can't be too many properties like that in town. And controlled by a friend of the University. How fortunate.

The Post is live streaming the Bat Rally via periscope. The attendance looks to be underwhelming, kind of like an EMU basketball game.

The Post had a piece that said that,as of last Friday,close to 700 people had said they would be attending the rally.
According to toady's (4/1) The Post about 100 people (students + faculty) showed up.
So much for this being a big issue.
I wonder how many of the 83 faculty members who signed the protest letter published in The Post last week were there.

There's also a very good interview/article in Today's The Post about the whole issue of bats entering old buildings.
I like the guy's one comment that when you find bats,you don't have a bat problem,but a strutural problem.
That and once they find a way in,they tend to keep coming back.

Yesterday I was on campus, hosting parents and students from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Why me? One parent was one of my interns back in the late 1980s,and she reached out to me for help. The students are interested in engineering and some googling had told them about Russ College.

Anyway, after meeting with a dean, faculty and student ambassadors at Russ, we strolled campus. When walking by the president's long-time house, I was reminded of my student days. In the evenings Vern Alden occasionally would drop into dorm lounges to chat with students. That likely wouldn't have happened had Vern lived off campus, and with Rod McDavis living off campus it seems inevitable that it will diminish his campus presence.

Check out image 5 of 6 from the Dispatch article and you'll see way more than 100 people.

Looked at the Dispatch picture.
I agree there are more then 100 people.

I dislike over or under estimating the number of people at an event, based how the reporter feels about that group's cause.

One of the things I do as a land surveyor is analyze aerial and terrestrial photographs.
I looked at the photo using a template I use for this type of analysis.
Came up with 220 people.
More then the 100 The Post reported , but no where near the 700 who were supposed to attend.

Based on the number of students, faculty and employees, it doesn't seem like this issue is resonating with that many people.


As I also said in a previous post, I wonder how many of the 83 faculty members who signed the letter in The Post bothered to show up ?

Only on BA. We have experts on everything. Thanks for sharing your expertise. I trust this analysis and suspect it's the best estimate available. Personally, I prefer that the president live on campus, but this is not an issue that I would go to the wall about. The O$U prez lives in a very snazzy house in the most expensive part of Bexley. My wife is a native of Bexley (in a more middle class section), so I'm very familiar with the town.

Just because someone doesn't show up doesn't mean it doesn't resonate with them. I was on a plane Tuesday or I would have made it. It will be interesting to see and I'm not sure how this can be measured what effect this has on giving. In the thread after this, an unpopular decision has clearly had an effect on giving. The only thing that gets the attention of organizations today is money. Look at the backlash that the states of Indiana and Arkansas are receiving. Anyway, a good discussion on a timely topic.

I saw the news yesterday. I thought it was odd as I assumed the house was no longer lived in since the '90s and that it was more of a meet-n-greet building.

Maybe there was just a major remodel in the 90s so it looked unused for sometime??

"Attending" on Facebook is not actually equal to attending in real life. When I was attending OU, I regularly clicked "attending" on invites to events (mostly friend's parties) just so I would get FB notifications on the comments on that event. Now of course, most of the event notifications I get on FB are spam events like this so I do not bother to look at them. If my friends want to invite me to something, there are much better apps available.

I've forwarded the Anews and Post articles about this to many Bobcat alums and non-alumns I know and their reaction has been puzzlement over the protest. And many work at other universities.

One joked that this should have been expected when the two most hated professions in Athens are involved -- the OU president and a landlord. Thought that was pretty funny. And telling.

Sometimes this campus/town acts like everything is a huge Watergate conspiracy type thing, whether it is a city or university issue. The sky is falling! Again! I guess that's more fun than than seeing things as normal/typical business.

When Kasich takes his axe to higher education, I can't imagine this will even be on his radar.
